    New castle was built in 1763-1769 for family and guests of Friedrich II by architects Johann Gottfrid Buering, Heinrich Ludwig Manner and Carl von Gottard. There are 200 rooms, but 60 rooms around were for living. Last reconstruction was in last German Kaiser Wilhelm II times (beginning of XX century). There are interesting exhibits and details of the king's family life, including winter sledge used by Friedrich II.
    The palace is open 9 am-5 pm (till 4 pm in winter times), Fridays closed. in winter times it is possible to go inside only with guide and the entrance fee is EUR 5. The official site says it is possible to go by yourself but only in summer.

    The summer residence of Friedrich II the Great was built in 1745-1747 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobellsdorf. It was a state residence long time where the king had all private and state affairs. You can find fantastic interior, including Volter room, and wonderful outside architectural style and statues on the castle. There are severl wonderful paintings of Flamish, Italian and French painters and my opinion is that art collection is richer than in the Art State Museum in Berlin :-)
    The Castle is open from 9 am till 5 pm (till 4 pm in winter time), closed in Mondays, only guide tour available and no making photos not allowed. The entrance fee is EUR 8.

    Chinese House is the example of the popular mode of Asian in European architecture. It was built by Johann Gottfrid Buering in 1754-1757 (although one of the guides says the works finished in 1764). The house was used for the sommer dinner. There are a lot of golden figure around, one of them is on the picture. To go inside is possible from May till October.

    In 1851-1864 the orangerie was built. In accordance with the wish of Friedrich Wilhelm IV it has classic Italian style. In winter it is closed for tour inside and you can enjoy interior only from April until October. As the internet site says it is possible to go upstairs to the tower.

    There is wonderful park around castles besides. I'm really fan of parks and gardens. When I came first day here, Sanssouci was closed and I enjoyed park during 3 hours I think :-) Next day was snowing and the park looks absolutely in other way. Some pics you can see in my travelogue. Besides there are some wonderful statues in the park.

    Not far from Orangerie, the Belvedere is situated. That word means 'wonderful view' and Friedrich enjoyed here view of the park as well as view of Potsdam town. The building was built in 1769. From Orangerie to Belvedere you can go along wonderful park line.

    In the courtyard of Sanssouci, from place near of entrance, you can enjoy view to Ruinenberg, that is situated on the hill, just in front of Sanssouci Palace. It is water reservoir place for fountains in the park. Besides there are artificial ruins around and that was the reason to get such name to the place. It was built in 1748.

    On the trip to Potsdam I had the seemingly bright idea of alighting one train stop before Potsdam, in Babelsburg, and walking the rest of the way. My main motivation for doing this was a desire to see the famous Glienicker Bridge, a place where spies were excahnged during the cold war, and where the the former East German - West Berlin border ran.

    Lesson 1: The distances between stations are a lot less in Zone 1 than out in Potsdam. It was at least a 3 km hike to the bridge and from there another 2 km into the centre of Potsdam.

    Lesson 2: If the forecast is for 30 degree heat then there will be 30 degree heat. The weathermen here don't lie, unlike those at home:) I had very little water, not too much food, and no sunscreen - arriving in Potsdam I was three shades of pink and almost too tired to do any sightseeing.

    Lesson 3: If you are going to walk that distance in the heat, it's better to check a map or ask the locals for help. I wandered out of Babelsburg station in what I thought was Karl Liebneckt Strasse, and it was only when I reached open country side that I began to get worried. I stooped to ask a girl for directions, and luckily I was going the right way.

    I have tried to find out more info about these characters in Stadtmitte, Potsdam but apart from them being called the Green Family and created by a local sculptor I have nothing else to tell you about them!

    There were lots of tourists having their photo taken with them so I had to wait for them to go before I could take this one!

    The Sanssouci Park is large and if you wish to visit all the different sites you have to enjoy walking because it is about 15kms to walk around them all.
