The Spreewald - south of Berlin by globetrott Spreewald is a big area south of Berlin , around the small town of Lübben. The Spree is a small river there and because of the danger of high waters after heavy rainfalls, the inhabitants of this flat area had the idea to build thousands of small canals, all combined with each other, so the regular floods were not so bad any more. Since some centuries it is usual to go on these waterarms with small boats driven by a "Spreewald- Gondoliere" who has a large stick to move on the boats. It became a real tourist-event, already in the times of DDR - (the so called Democratic Republic of Germany) and is still a great event today. I spent 3 days there and we took several rides with these great boats - at some areas they go with the engine and some parts like the 'Hochwald' - the 'high forest' the gondoliere has to push the boat... great chandeliers in the park of Sanssouci by globetrott All over the park of Sanssouci you may find great chandeliers, the most beautiful are certainly the ones on my picture, standing in front of the New Palais, facing the big allee of the park. In the beginning they were lighted by candles, lateron by gas and now they are finally electrified. At several places all over the park you will find maps with the most important sights -make sure you will not miss anything ! Leave a Comment

the bush-arcades in the park of Sanssouci by globetrott Close to the Orangerie you may walk through this nice bush-arcades for quite a long time and these arcades even give a good protection during a rainy day, just in case of a sudden rainfall. There you may also see, how plenty of people will be in charge to keep the whole park growing and look beautiful forthe visitors ! It is a pity that picture is not really perfect, all of the pics on my Potsdam-page are slides, that I had to scan for VT. Leave a Comment

great details in Sanssouci by globetrott There are plenty of lovely sculptures all over the castle-park of Sanssouci. Just click on my picture and take a closer look at this beautiful bench with a lovely eagle-decoration . I took this picture at the big fountain, surrounded by lovely sculptures. On this picture you may as well see the terraces of artificial vinyards that Friedrich made a part of the whole architecture. I am not sure whether this wine is any good for drinking - the grapes that I saw there in august were so tiny, that I cannot believe that the vinyard is anything else than just a historic decoration. the old Fritz and his horse by globetrott All over the park of Sanssouci you will find plenty of great sculptures like the one on my picture, showing Friedrich the Great on his horse. Friedrich had the nickname " der alte fritz" - the old Fritz, mainly because he was going in his carriage across his country in order to talk to the common people and he tried to convince them to grow potatoes. it needed several years before he had convinced them, to eat the roots and throw aways the "fruits" Leave a Comment

by Mariajoy A large mushroom spotted on the verge on Koenigstrasse somewhere between Berliner Vorstadt and Berlin Wannsee. At dusk, these verges, on the edges of woodland, are frequented by foraging Wildschwein (boar), which are so large that they have sometimes been mistaken for donkeys by passing motorists!! (I didn't make this up... I have it from a friendly local! :) Leave a Comment

Opposite the new palace in the Sanssouci Royal Park is this rather grand building that was the servant’s quarters. Designed by Knobelsdorff in 1747 it has 88 corinthian double columns arranged in 2 quarter circles. Leave a Comment

Dilapidated palace by dlandt I'm not sure how this one got overlooked, but this is a palace which is in serious need of some work. (Good place to film a haunted house flick.) Leave a Comment

Havel by barryg23 Just a short distance outside Potsdam (though it didn't feel it after walking there in 30 degree heat), there are great views of the Havel, and it feels like you are deep in the countryside, not just on the outskirts of Potsdam & Berlin. Leave a Comment

by barryg23 On the road to Potsdam...after stpping in Babelsburg it took me forever to get to Potsdam. I walked via the Glienicker Bridge, which I had long wanted to see. Leave a Comment
