Marmorpalais under wraps by Mariajoy Exterior renovations were being undertaken when we visited the Marble Palace. The palace was designed in 1787 (at the decree of Frederick William II) by D F Gontard and the architect was C G Langhans (who also built the Brandenburg gate.) We were able to see the beautiful interior though, full of lush, ornate, furnishings, paintings, marble fireplaces, sculptures and chandeliers etc etc ...and had to wear those giangantic felt slippers over our shoes so as not to damage the highly polished parquet flooring. No photography is permitted, no touching the furniture (even accidentally!) and no noise either! When going up and down the steps within the building the visitor is required to removed said huge slippers... at one point I accidentally dropped my felt (how noisy can that be???) slipper causing more of a "boof" than a "bang" sound. I was surprised to hear an irritated "SHHHHHH!!!" behind me from one of the guards..... oh I mean .... "museum attendants." Check the website for opening times and entrance fees. Leave a Comment

Once a secondary border crossing point between East and West, it was on this bridge that in 1989 many Potsdam inhabitants crossed for the first time in 28 years into the West when the wall came down. There is a plaque on the bridge commemorating this historical moment. This bridge was also the point at which in 1962, during the cold war, an American pilot accused of spying by the Soviets was secretly exchanged for one of their men who was on a 30 year jail sentence in the US. the Orangerie by globetrott Normally the Orangerie of a palace was ment mainly in order to be able to serve tropical and exotic fruits for the king, and of course in order to take in the palmtrees during the hard wintertimes and protect them against the winterfrost. But in Sanssouci the Orangerie is quite a big building and was used as the residence by the sister of Friedrich the Great and her husband Tsar Nikolaus I. The "Raffaelsaal" is the most beautiful room of the Orangerie and it shows several replicas of works by Raffael. On the terrace of the Orangerie you will have a great view over Potsdam. The interior may be seen may15th - oct.15th Tue-Sun 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. Leave a Comment Directions: The Orangerie is about 200 meters from Sanssouci palace.

the windmill of Sanssouci by globetrott Just a few meters outside of the park of Sanssouci you may still see an old windmill, that existed already before King Friedrich the Great started to build his castle. The King tried quite often to buy the mill - simply because it made lots of strange noises during the day and it looks a bit strange to have such a mill as a background to a castle - still today, when you take a picture of the castle it looks strange... The miller did NOT sell his mill, and Friedrich had some sorrows even in Sans - souci... Leave a Comment Directions: The windmill is just behind the palace of Sanssouci, BUT outside of the park !

The Picture-gallery is open daily except mondays ! Leave a Comment Directions: The picture-gallery is next to Sanssouci palace in a distance of about 50 meters.

Schloss Charlottenhof by globetrott Schloss Charlottenhof is another - much smaller - castle inside the park of Sanssouci castle and it was named after Charlotte von Gentzkow. The castle has just a ground floor and is built like a Roman Villa with a big terrace behind the portikus. The castle Charlottenhof was built in 1829 by Friedrich Schinkel and its most interesting room is the so-called "Humboldtsaal" reminding of a tent. Inside the castle you may see a collection of etchings. Charlottenhof castle is open: may15th till oOctober 15th Tuesday-Sunday: 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. Leave a Comment Directions: Schloss Charlottenhof is on your way from the new pails to Sanssouci palace,BUT on a deviation quite far to the south.

the new palais and the park by globetrott The park of Sanssouci has 287 hectars and is certainly one of the most beautiful parks all over Europe. You might need the whole day to explore the castle and park with all its great castles, Pavillions, the Orangerie, a Roman castle and the lovely Chinese teahouse. Especially in summertime lots of tourist-buses will come to Potsdam and long queues will be waiting at the cashiers and castle-entrance. The park itself could be entered freely and without restrictions during the day - at night the gates will be locked! Leave a Comment Directions: Potsdam and Sanssouci palace is just a few km west of Berlin - get there by train within 25 minutes from Friedrichstrasse !

19th C pyramid in the park by Mariajoy This little pyramid in the New Garden is adorned with hyroglyphic symbols carved in blocks on the outside. At first I thought it was just some kind of royal folly, but on further investigation discovered that it was used in the 1800s as an ice house. Ice was taken in blocks during the winter from the Holy Lake and stored 5 meters down under the pyramid where it would remain still frozen until the following summer. the Chinese Teahouse by globetrott China and its customs and architecture was admired at many countries in Europe, and it became quite common to add a small teahouse or maybe a Chinese Saloon to many castles in the baroque. But such a big and special Tea-house is still quite unique and it is beautifully decorated with golden sculptures and ornate golden decoartions. When the king and his friends had tea there, they were dressed in long silk-dresses and drank the tea in precious porcelain. Today the Chinese Teahouse is used to show the collection of precious chinese poreclain: The Chinese Teahouse is open: May 15th-oct.15th : Tuesday-Sunday 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m. Leave a Comment Directions: The Chinese Teahouse is about halfway between the New Palais and Sanssouci palace !
