Potsdam Things to Do

  • Church of St. Peter and Paul

The Church of St. Peter and Paul towers above the eastern end of Brandenburger Straße. The most conspicuous distinguishing mark of the yellow brick building is the Italian-style campanile with a height of almost 60 meters.

  • Brandenburger Straße

The city of Potsdam is really blessed with many listed buildings: there are more than 2,000 in the city's official files. The term 'historic city center' is not only applicable to the Holländische Viertel (the Dutch Quarter) and the Second Baroque city expansion, but also to the Weavers' Quarter in Babelsberg.

Potsdam Restaurants

  • Some sausages

I turned to this place just to have some dinner, and one of the chooses was, of course, sausages. I opted for them and also for green tea. The cost for all of that was about 9 euros. I enjoyed place, but it was a bit too much ketchup on sausages :) Also it is unhealthy food, but I allow it to myself on trips :)

Potsdam Transportation

  • To/from Potsdam

I took S-Bahn S7 from Hauptahnhof (Central Train Station) of Berlin. Actually these S-Bahns go quite frequently and you don't need separate ticket to Potsdam. That town belongs to Berlin public tranzportation zone C, so you need a ticket with included C zone. It costs 3,10 euros (as for the year of 2012).From Potsdam's S-Bahn station you need to go...

It's a special store with providing cheese only, a selection of about 130 different sorts of cheese. Imagine. Cheese, cheese, and more cheese. It's a lovely, neat, clean, very friendly place as if that store wasn't located in a big town like Potsdam but in some country side.

Potsdam Local Customs

  • The more things change....

I find it interesting to note how quickly things change when there is a change or regime, or system, as occurred with German Reunification. All of a sudden Karl Marx Stadt became Chemnitz again, for example.Still, some reminders remain. For example, the Babelsberg section of Potsdam has housed a major film industry since last century. Today,...

Potsdam Warnings and Dangers

  • English language

Most of the local people that are above 40-45 years old do not speak English at all. I suppose that it results form the former GDR-times when the people were forced to learn Russian. If you go to Potsdam, be prepared to use some important German phrases: in banks, in the administration services or in the bars. The Civil service in the Rathaus...

  • Wi-fi internet

In Potsdam, like in all Germany, there is no any free wi-fi internet. You can find internet in some of the cafes or restaurants, especially around Brandeburger Strasse. Otherwise you could buy a T-mobile card for access which is 5 euro per hour (but it is accessible only at some pulbic places).

  • Safe

There's still some run down looking housing near the centre of the city and around the train station, but the place didn't feel threatening at all. Well it's Germany. The place was friendly and relaxed and it doesn't have a reputation for trouble.

Potsdam Tourist Traps

  • It is still possible to see it itself

Lithuanian travel agencies organize excursions to Berlin, also Potsdam. So, as I heard before, 'it is very hard to visit whole Potsdam yourself'. Possible it was a trick, as it is really not hard to make a day trip here, to see all the main sights.Anyway, some of my comments: it is better to get up earlier and go to Potsdam not in weekend, as it is...
