Tropical geodome in the middle of Germany

by miromi

This has to be one of the weirder places in Northern Europe: a former military building area is converted into an artificial tropical paradise complete with beaches, "authentic" tropical huts and a bevy of imported tropical Brazilian and Thai dancers. While not everything here may be politically correct, it does show the extent that Germans will go to escape cold weather and someone will be certain to write their dissertation on the German conceptions of paradise. When you live here as long as I have, you'll start drooling after hot tropical beaches too. I haven't been here yet, but will certainly make it out there just for the thrill factor.

Potsdam

by Leipzig

Potsdam is located on the Havel River, on Berlin’s doorstep and has a population of about 135,000. It is the administrative centre of Brandenburg. Here the State government has its headquarters and all the Ministries and Offices. The city was badly damaged by bombing in World War II (1939-1945) and rebuilt only recently. In 1945 it was the site of the Potsdam Conference.Potsdam offers visitors numerous attractions, for instance the Sanssouci Palace (1745-1747), built by Frederick II, which is an UNESCO World Heritage, the Babelsberg Film Park and much more.

Himmelpfort

by Leipzig

Do you know where the German Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) comes from? He lives in Himmelpfort (=Heaven's Gate), a small town in the Uckermark (county of Brandenburg). Every year the Weihnachtsmann has to respond ten thousands of letters from kids. The town itself was founded when Monchs build their monastery next to the Havel River in 1299. Today people spend their holidays on one of the numerous lakes around the town.

Lübbenau is the biggest small town in Spreewald. It is the center of tourism and has a harbour, from where the boat tours into the Spreewald start. There is a castle and an old church. The oldest buildings are from 18th century.

About 100 kilometres south from Berlin, the Spreewald region stretches over a total area of more than three thousand (3,173) square kilometres, split into the Lower and Upper Spreewald. In its core, 75 km long and 15 km wide, is the area designated by UNESCO in 1991 as the Spreewald biosphere nature reserve.

POTSDAM > Sanssouci

by globetrott

Today Sanssouci palace is one of the major attractions of Potsdam with long queues of people waiting to see the interior.Friedrich the Great made the first sketches for his new castle himself in 1745 and the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsddorf built the castle according to these plans. The interior was built by Knobelsdorff and Johann August Nahl and is absolutely worth a visit !Unfortunately I saw just the buildings from outside and the park. Sanssouci is ONLY that flat and rather small building you may see on my picture. You walk up lots of steps and will pass by lots of vinyards before you get to the castle.

POTSDAM > Sanssouci palace

What a lovely place, this small summercastle with the famous steps and artificial vinyards."Sans souci" is the french expression for " without trouble / sorrows" and this name was choosen by King Friedrich the Great for his summerpalace in Potsdam, because he was trying to get a palace, far away from busy Berlin and far away from "his job" .Friedrich the Great was rather a pilosopher, composer and flutist than a king or a strategist. He wanted to build a palace , where he could meet friends, play the flute, discuss about philosphy and have a simple, peaceful life umong his friends and visitors from all over Europe.

Spreewald

The Spreewald (Spree Forest) is ca. 70km southeast of Berlin. Since 1990 it is one of Germany's largest nature preserve and belongs since 1991 to UNESCO World Nature Heritage. This region is home of about 18000 types of plants and animals. In the summer month you can see a lot of storks breeding here. Cycling, hiking and boating are the best ways to discover the unique nature of this reservat.

Potsdam

Potsdam is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen, and it is Brandenburg's star tourist attraction. The castle San Souci is a gigantic sprawling castle with decadent gardens that were modeled after the castle in Versailles in France. Actually, it was a little weird, as when I went to France I had a strange sense of deja vu, as San Souci copied a LOT from it. The benefit is that San s. is in Germany, and is not crammed with too many tourists, and has of course its own personality (I hope). Take the S Bahn from Berlin to Potsdam, look deliberately confused at the train station and any non burned out train station person will shove you in direction of the tourist buses ( you can also hop on a faster but more confusingly planned RE train)The town of Potsdam itself is also quite gorgeous and has been renovated and gentrified in the last 10 years so as to be unaffordable to the...
