My favorite mountain
  • Tip Rating:
  • Milseburg! It's a wonderful, easy hike up this 825 m mountain, you are rewarded with an incredible view and yummy pea soup or ice cream.

It's peaceful and quiet up there, though usually busy with hikers of all ages, you get fresh air, the wind is blowing all the problems out of your mind and it's one of the best experiences to sit up on the rocks and watch the scenery around you.

    History
  • Tip Rating:
  • Philip of Hesse, a German reformer, was responsible for reuniting of territories in Germany’s centre. At his death in 1567 Philip of Hesse's lands were divided among his four sons, with Kassel, Marburg, Rheinfels, and Darmstadt their respective capitals. The Congress of Vienna (1814/15) gave Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt substantial territorial gains the other lines of Hesse had demised in the 16th and 17th century. Huge parts of Hesse were annexed by Prussia in 1868. In 1871, Hesse-Darmstadt joined the German Empire. Today, Hesse has been reunited with Wiesbaden as capital.

    Visiting Heppenheim
  • Tip Rating:
  • About 30 km in the south of Darmstadt is Heppenheim. It is a small city and the Old Town of it is very nice with many half-timbered houses and narrow streets.

Once a year Heppenheimer Festspiele take place. From mid July until beginning of September you can visit different performances. The Heppenheimer Festspiele may be the most successful private theater of Germany.

For more pictures please see my Heppenheim page

You can find more infos about Heppenheim on

    Hessen
  • Tip Rating:
  • To tell you the truth, I know very little about this region.
In general, Frankfurt am Main is the financial centre of Germany and Wiesbaden is one of the places that worth to visit but I haven't been there myself yet.

Hesse, Germany's financial and commercial centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • I travel here at least twice a year to visit my friend in Frankfurt. It's a great state for relaxing and hiking. Vast forests and clear lakes make this state ideal for family travels.

Frankfurt or Mainhatten....most travelers arrive at Ffm Airport when visiting Germany. one of the busiest in the World
but Frankfurt can also show of with a rich history, pretty importand to Germany...and its Altstadt..is still a lovely place to be
the pic has been send to me by a friend.

actually...I don't have fond memories of Frankfurt, except visiting my girlfriend there, that was always nice. Ffm has always been some sort of platform for ..taking off, or landing when on travel. the Airport has become sooo huge, rollerscates or bike should be handy to get from one terminal to the other.
having said all that nasty stuff about Ffm...sure there is something I realy liked doing..shopping

    Geography
Hesse has a great variety of terrain, offering vacation and sport opportunities to almost everyone's tastes. Whether you like mountains, lakes, forests or rivers, Hesse has it for you. Germans like to categorize their vacation areas into regions instead of single destinations. Surely you have heard of the Alps or the Black Forest. These are regions in Germany, which sometime encompass more than one German state, and sometimes even different countries, as in the Alps. Please see the sights tips for a brief description of the different regions you can visit in Hesse.

The capital of the State of Hesse is Wiesbaden. Some people find this confusing because it's not the largest city. Fact is, not all Hessians are aware that Wiesbaden and not Frankfurt am Main is the capital of Hesse. Frankfurt am Main is, of course, the largest city in Hesse. Other major cities include Kassel, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, Hanau, Giessen, Limburg and Fulda. Frankfurt and Offenbach are always noted with the rivers they are located on, because there are other towns and cities in Germany that have the same name, such as Frankfurt an der Oder, a large city in the state of Brandenburg.

    Hesse has 21 counties and 5 cities that count as counties. You can always tell which county that people live in by looking at their cars. German license plates have abbreviations for which county where the car is registered. The city-counties include; Frankfurt am Main (F), Wiesbaden (WI), Darmstadt (DA), Kassel (KS), Offenbach am Main (OF). The other counties in Hesse include;
Main-Kinzig-Kreis (MKK) or (HU) for Hanau
    Bergstrasse (HP) for Heppenheim
Darmstadt-Dieburg (DA) because it belongs to Darmstadt
    Groß-Gerau (GG)
    Hochtaunuskreis (HG) for Bad Homburg
    Main-Taunus-Kreis (MTK)
    Oldenwaldkreis (ERB) for Erbach
Kreis Offenbach (OF) for the rest of Offenbach that isn't city
    Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis (RÜD) for Rüdesheim
    Wetteraukreis (FB) for Friedburg
    Gießen (GI)
    Lahn-Dill-Kreis (LDK)
    Limburg-Weilburg (LM) for Limburg
    Marburg-Biedenkopf (MR) for Marburg
    Vogelbergkreis (VB)
    Fulda (FD)
    Hersfeld-Rotenburg (HEF) for Bad Hersfeld
Kassel (KS) for the rest of Kassel that isn't city
Schwalm-Eder-Kreis (HR) for Homberg von der Efze
    Werra-Meißner-Kreis (ESW) for Eschwege
    Waldeck-Frankenberg (KB) for Korbach.

    Hessian Government
Roland Koch - Minister President of Hesse - Land Hessen
    Roland Koch - Minister
    President of Hesse
    by Weissdorn

Like states in the United States of America, German states have governors. Their official title, though, is Minister President. The current Minister President of Hesse is Mr. Roland Koch, who belongs to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a conservative party.

At the moment, the CDU party holds the absolute majority in the state parliament, which is known as the "Landtag". Like most German states, Hesse has it's own constitution. But unlike the United States, German state laws do not supercede German federal laws. For example, Hesse is the only state in Germany that still has the death penalty on the books. But no one can be punished by death in Hesse, because the federal constitution doesn't allow it. State laws in Germany usually only effect things like the state education system, the laws pertaining to state workers, laws pertaining to private and public property, and utility regulation.

This federalism is a blessing for tourists traveling through Germany, because it means that you cannot be fined higher for a speeding ticket in Bavaria than in Hesse. A parking ticket is a different story, though. Politicians do are not elected directly - neither in Hesse nor in Germany. The voters elect a party, and the party officials elect the politician. Most Hessian voters know, though, which politician will be elected, because the parties nominate their candidates before elections.

Map of the State of Hesse
The State of Hesse is in green; Germany is in gray - Land Hessen
The State of Hesse is in
    green; Germany is in gray
    by Weissdorn

Pictured is a map of Germany. The state marked in green is the State of Hesse. It's not very big; only 21,115 square kilometers. I know there are bigger counties in the State of Texas, but it will take you about two hours on the German Autobahn to drive from the northern border to the southern border. As you see, Hesse is located in the middle of Germany. That's the way it's always been - Hesse has always been right smack-dab in the middle. In the middle of wars; in the middle of political conflicts; in the middle of language development; in the middle of commerce; in the middle of the religious reformation period; in the middle of the flow of continuous change. Hesse is bordered by the German states of North Rhineland Westphalia in the northeast; Lower Saxony in the north; Thuringia in the east; Bavaria in the southeast; Baden Wurtemberg in the southwest; and Rhineland Palatinate in the west.
