History
Philip of Hesse, a German reformer, was responsible for reuniting of territories in Germany’s centre. At his death in 1567 Philip of Hesse's lands were divided among his four sons, with Kassel, Marburg, Rheinfels, and Darmstadt their respective capitals. The Congress of Vienna (1814/15) gave Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt substantial territorial gains the other lines of Hesse had demised in the 16th and 17th century. Huge parts of Hesse were annexed by Prussia in 1868. In 1871, Hesse-Darmstadt joined the German Empire. Today, Hesse has been reunited with Wiesbaden as capital.
