Bistro Schirn: Eating in the Barn
The house this restaurant is located in was built in 1530. That makes it over 470 years old! The most charming part about it is that it's one of those rustic old half-timbered houses - old on the outside, quaint, but modern on the inside. Occasionally they stage parties here - especially when they have folk dancing groups in August.
Favorite Dish: The food is typical bistro: snacks, pizza, schnitzel, pasta, salad - nothing too fancy or out of the ordinary, just favorites that everyone likes - at not too expensive, either.
I recommend their Porc Filet Steak "Roquefort" in Roquefort cheese cream sauce with cranberries, tater-tots and salad for 10.50 €, if you're really hungry. Otherwise you might like their spaghetti with smoked salmon and dill sauce for 6.80 €.
They're open from Sunday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. and on Saturdays from 6:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.
Schloss-Cafe Lukasch: German Kaffee at 3 p.m.
If you ever wanted to indulge into a German Café/Bakery - this is the place to go. One of the last few remaining "culinary pits of sin" as the dieticians would condemn it. This is one of those elegant cafés with German (copied from the Austrians) tradition.
Don't hesitate, even if you don't speak the langauge. Walk into the bakery, point at the piece of cake you want - the friendly lady will give you a number, which you give to the waitress when she greets you at your table.
If you're strong enough to resist all of those sumptous baked goods, cake, torte, and hand-made truffles, at least go for a "Kännchen Kaffee". It will make Starbucks taste like your last oil change!
Favorite Dish: They have specials for every day of the week:
Monday - Coffee cake with country or multi grain bread at a discount.
Tuesday is the traditional cake tasting day.
Wednesdays they have the whole-grain loaf with five different kinds of whole-grain rolls at a sample price.
Thursdays is Schmierchel Cake Day - a speciality in East Hessen.
Fridays is bread specialty tasting day, with your choice of a dozen different kinds of bread.
Saturdays they have a choice of 15 different kinds of cake.
Sundays they serve brunch from 10:00 to 12:30 o'clock.
