Herborn Things to Do

  • Kirchberg

Rising above Herborn is a seminarium and the Stadkirche (church). The towers are interesting. They were used as prisons. Bad students of the "Hohe Schule" were put in the Karzerturm, heavy criminals were put in the Hexenturm and those citizens that broke the law were put in the Bürgerturm.

  • Lovely shopping street

The pedestrial central area houses some lovely shops in the old buildings. There was a great fire in 1626 and since the houses were rebuilt.

  • Coat of arms

The coat of arms all around the town hall were put there from around 1650. They were all family coats of arms of the town mayors and councillors. It was restored in 1914 and shows a kind of "who's who" of those who held power some 300 years ago.

  • Town hall

Inside the town hall is a large entry hall with an early baroque staircase. Along the staircase are paintings which were gifts by the Nassau-Dillenburg family who ruled this region some four centuries ago.

Building started in 1589 but it got its current form in 1630. It was used as town hall, weigh house, court house, weapon arsenal, wine cellar, and even as dancing.

  • Some local strolling

I didn't quite catch that typical green Bayerisches costume that the old gentleman wore. But the view is nice too.

  • Duck the bridge?

A good sign in Herborn is that a lot of attention is paid to how it looks. This little detail on the bridge. Flowers and duck sculptures around it.

  • Short town walk

We were expected in Herborn for brunch in the Marktcafé on the central market square. To our surprise this turned out to be a very nice little town and we took a bit of time to stroll around on a quiet, early Sunday morning. Here's the Leonard Tower as part of the old fortifications.

This is what one would call a tearoom or lunchroom. There are lovely cakes and teaspecialities from Ostfriesland.

Favorite Dish: Tea is served in a pot with rock sugar and milk and a tiny cup. I guess the amount would fit in a large mug and it cost aroun € 3,50 to € 4,00.

I had breakfast here with some 50 people all spread over the 3 levels, connected by quite steep stairs.

Hi, I really liked what you wrote about Herborn. I'm German-American and have been living here in Herborn for 10 years now. Herborn is such a beautiful town and I'm glad that other people appreciate that as well.
The bears that you saw all over town were left overs from the 750th town anniversary 2 years ago. The whole year there were parties and celebrations and to celebrate the towns "mascot" which is the bear of course, the "Werbering" ( alot of shopowners teamed up to kinda save their small shops from being closed down due to the big stores that are starting to open all around Herborn) decided to make replicas of the bear, and as you said they where sponsored by their own shops. I'm glad you enjoyed Herborn and the next time you come to Herborn, dont go to the Marktcafe, it's nice, but there are alot of cafe's alot nicer downtown. Try the Zygzag or the Hohe Schule. and in the evenings, go to
Leo`s Keller! Nice ambiente and sometimes live music. gruß aus Herborn,
    Jennifer Keaton
