Rauischholzhausen’s fairy tale castle

by Trekki

Approximately 10 km to Marburg’s east lies Rauischholzhausen, a lovely little village with a pure gem of a castle. It is the castle of the noble family of Rau of Holzhausen (thus the name) who owned a great portion of the surrounding land and a farm in the past. 1871, Baron von Stumm (a relative of the Stumm dynasty in Saarland) bought the property and built the castle as we see it today in a Neoclassical style. It is a beautiful castle both from inside and outside and very much picturesque in spring and autumn when the ivy at the walls change its colour. The surrounding park is very pleasant for a stroll and a relaxed time. I was here very often when I lived in Marburg, the park was a perfect environment for some hours of learning. Inside the castle is a café which serves coffee, tea, soft drinks, cakes and snacks. They also provide outdoor seating in the warmer months. When I was...

Darmstadt - nice Jugenstil

by Trekki

If you like Art Nouveau, you should make a short trip to Darmstadt and wander around on Mathildenhöhe, the town’s centre for beautiful architecture and exhibitions of this period.Landgrave Ernst-Ludwig has created a place for design early 20th century, which attracted a lot of famous Art Nouveau designers and architects. 4 exhibitions took place in these years, and luckily, most of the buildings have survived the heavy bombing of Darmstadt in WWII.A lot more Art Nouveau buildings are spread in town, a bit hidden for example the house in Moosbergstrasse (see pic), along Rhönring and in Martinsviertel. For visitors, which like to stay a bit longer, the town has nice parks, such as Rosenhöhe with a beautiful rose dome (see pic), a Russian Chapel also on Mathildenhöhe (as Alexandra of Darmstadt was married to Tsar Nicolas II).In the middle of town, there is a small rococo garden (Prinz Georg...

Worms – Nibelungs and Holy Roman Empire

by Trekki

Worms was of much importance during the Holy Roman Empire. A lot of disputes and decisions took place here, and it was also here, where Luther was banished from the church (with Worms Edict). The Imperial Cathedral holds treasures such as a baroque high choir by Balthasar Neumann and many other architectural delights. And of course, the Nibelungs ! Who likes old sagas and legends, will surely have heard of Siegfried and Kriemhild and sinister Hagen, who dumped the legendary gold treasure into the Rhine. It was (said to be) here, where most of the parts of Nibelung Saga did take place, and the city does its best to reveal all this on a walk through this nice town. And of course, in hypermodern Nibelung Museum you can listen to the tale, told by the anonymous poet of the legend. We will meet Siegfried again (provided that I get my butt moved to the respective places in Odenwald and take...

The Boyneburg, romantic hidden castle in forest

by elgin99

That castle you can´t see from everywhere outside!About the B27 of Bad Hersfeld about Bebra and Sontra direction Wichmannshausen. In Wichmannshausen the sign-posting to the property Boyneburgk follow. The ruins are signposted only behind the property Boyneburgk. Another way is found very difficult, we gone it. From B7 (Eschwege) right to Germerode. At begin of that village right a little sign to "Boyneburgk", don´t pass! Or ask a citizen like we done. It´s a road till the forest starts. Then you have to walk straight on till you reach the "Three lime trees" (lime trees also in truth). Take the middle of the three footpaths, it´s the smallest. Follow across the forest, mostly with interesting beeches. You will need 30 or more minutes to reach the castle ruins. But it is a fantastic way! Then you reach suddenly a place (former tourney place) with meadows and old fruit trees). From the end...

In the proximity of Wiesbaden at the Rhine bank is a large bird reservation. Well to watch are above all the numerous storks, if one drives to the port of Schierstein. Everywhere on the electric masts and in high trees the storks settling. They do not even leave in the winter this area. Not only for lovers of nature and animal world recommendable. That area is calling in Germany Wasserwerkswiesen (near Schierstein).
