Seligenstadt Things to Do

  • Oh heavenly beer – brewery tour

Ah yes, Glaab’s brewery. I was really happy that I joined our group to learn about beer. Glaabs is one of the oldest brewery in this part of Germany and they are very proud to have already the fifth generation of brewers at hand, although the kid is five years (if I remember correctly). The brewery was founded in 1744, that’s why their newest beer...

  • Guided tour through town of Seligenstadt

An excursion through the town of Seligenstadt is a journey into history: An encounter with Roman legionairies, with mediaeval traders on their way to the Frankfurt Trade Fair, with skilled monks and art-loving abbots, with native artisans, wealthy merchants and poor fishermen and with emperors hunting in the dark forests. There are special guided...

Einhard-Basilika with Saints Marcellinus’s and Peter’s relics. Since 1925 it has borne the honorary title of minor basilica, bestowed by Pope Pius XI. Although the building was heavily modified over the centuries, this is nonetheless one of the most impressive basilicas with a basic Carolingian structure north of the...

Seligenstadt Restaurants

  • No doubt this cafe is pleasing

Though we've had nothing of their great looking selection of cakes and pastries and such, but coffee, mineralwater and juice only, their menu showed us that they do provid with nice breakfast and lunch. Lovely family and seniors oriented cafe.

  • The other Brewery in Seligenstadt

After spending a couple of hours wondering around the town and visiting the Christmas market we walked to the restaurant which is across the street from the train station and only about a 10 minute walk from the Altstadt. We arrived shortly after it was supposed to open (4:00 pm on Sunday) and actually had to wait for them to unlock the door. The...

  • The larger brewery in town

There are two breweries in Seligenstadt – Glaabsbrau and Kleines Brauhaus. Glaabsbrau is the larger of the two with a wide selection of beers that you can purchase in bottles at the local drinks stores (getränkemarkt) in the local area. There are also a number of restaurants in town that serve this beer (just look for the Glaabsbrau Umbrellas in...

(Sorry for this lousy screenshot, I am using Win7’s “Snipper” and that does not have a text function).
Seligenstadt can easily be reached by train and bus. The train station is in the western part of the city, while the city or town centre including brewery, monastery and Main River is to the east. Distance from train station (1 in my screenshot) to the eastern parts of the town is approx. 700 m. The brewery (2) is northwest of the town centre, approx. 100 m. What I have marked as (3) is the famous Kloster Seligenstadt (a former Benedictine abbey), very much worth to visit, although I haven’t done this yet. Have a look at the link I made and you will see, although the website is in German only.

    (1) train station, (2) brewery

I am pleased to see that this specific “beer” is still so famous even if it dates back as much as 90 years by now, actually not being “beer”. Beer lovers most probably know the German “Reinheitsgebot” (funny to see this term being used in English language), which stands for purity law and means that beer can/should/must only contain water, barley and hop. Since Malzbier contains barley malt and additional glucose syrup, it cannot be called beer. But then it does not contain alcohol and this makes it perfect for kids. This method was invented by Friedrich Glaab in 1920 and is being produced in Glaabs Brewery since then.
I grew up with this Vitamalz. Whenever my father had a beer in the evening, I joined him with my Malzbier bottle. Funny though that I never became a beer lover. I drink beer occasionally, but prefer wine. But it was fun when I realised that “my” Vitamalz was kind of born in Glaabs Brewery, and I was immediately thrown back to my kids days.

Vitamalz is still being sold and yes, I am seriously considering to become a customer again, no matter that I am no longer a kid. Somewhere I read that the taste can be compared to root beer. But I strongly object, root beer is much more sweet in my opinion. I leave it up to dear Richie to judge when D & he are back here in Germany.
