This speed camera will catch you !

by Trekki

German Autobahn (motorways) do have no speed limit in general. That's why lots of Germans think they are Michael Schumacher and fly the roads rather than drive. So here and there, we got some speed limits, mainly where motorways merge, where exits are or where some are under construction. Most of these speed limits are just designated with signs. Some, however, do have speed watch cameras.Usually these are hidden so that you won't see them easily. The most prominent one in Hessen is the one on A 67, just past Darmstädter Kreuz (the crossing of A 5 from Frankfurt to Basel and the A 67 from Darmstadt to south of Mannheim).Signs say 100 km/hr here, and you better do this, as otherwise, you'll get fined. In this case, they even placed 3 cameras in a row, just behind the second last of the bridges of the motorway lanes at Darmstädter Kreuz.Speed camera on A67, on Google Maps

Very "unfriendly" opening hours of churches

by Trekki

Again something where I am not sure if to place it as warning, as tourist trap or as general....On my weekend tours through states of southern Hessen and Palatine, I very often realize big differences between both states, be it general friendliness of people, gas prices or opening hours. Hessen mostly "looses", if I would compare both states. But as I have the choice to just get on the other side of the Rhine, it is easy for me.There is one thing though, which makes me mad, and this is about opening hours of churches. There are many in southern Hessen, which are described as nice and worth a visit - but how can I visit a church, if the doors are locked ??? This is independent from it being a Catholic or Protestant one.I can understand that a lot of churches are only open just before and after masses, if the priests or administration is afraid that objects might get stolen. But then they...

Wildlife animals - the bad example of a park

by elgin99

Near of Eschwege in the North of Hesse you find a park which is named "Wildpark Germerode". Therein live wild animals. Some of them are in small gates, some are "free". That means only that these animals live in the bigger area of the whole park. So people can walk through the park and feed the animals or try to touch. And that´s the problem. Who is controlling what people feed? And who protects the animals when masses of children run behind the animals, crying and loud? Animals there were been very easily scared! And then I had another bad experience: One young fallow deer stood beside from the gate of wild boars. His head was full with blood and suddenly it broken down. It was dying. I tried to find quickly one official of and in the park which could give him deliverance. It needed very long that one could find a hunter. Until the hunter arrived the animal lied there dying, and thanks...
