Szczecin
by Kristina1701
When in eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, why not go on a day trip to Szczecin in Poland. Actually the city isn't very nice to be honest (at least it isn't in my opinion), it has no Old Town and the city centre is dominated by socialist buildings. However there are some historical buildings here and there; this beautiful square (pictured) at the river is one example! Anyway, especially if you've never been to Eastern Europe before you might find a trip to Szczecin very interesting; I did! Before WW2 the city was German and was called Stettin. It was and still is an important seaport city. After the war it became Polish and for the former German Democratic Republic didn't have a real seaport city there was a time during which Poland was fearing they might have to return Szczecin to (East)Germany. That's also why the Polish government didn't invest as much into this city as in others.
Karnitz Castle
by Leipzig
Karnitz Castle is located near the identically named village, just 4km north of the town of Garz. The village was founded around 1300. In 1839 the castle was built in 1839. When I was here the castle was undergone a reconstruction.
Straight out of a Fairy Tale

This is the kind of site you might find if you venture off of the path a little bit. In the picture are the kids I looked after - we were enjoying a little picnic.
Take a hike in the forest from town to town

There are signs throughout the pathway through the forest and along the roads that show you how far you have to go to the next town.
Things you might find in the forest...

This old abandoned building is something I came across while walking through the forest, quite close to the castle in Kaarz.
