Wilhelm Gustloff

As with the planned resorts the Nazis operated KdF ships. These ships are on display in one of the rooms in the museum. The infamous Wilhelm Gustloff sank at the end of World War II with 11.000 refugees onboard after being hit by Russian submarines.

During the time of the German Democratic Republic part of the buildings were used to accommodate officers and those who the party wanted to give a bonus. Hence the rooms were enlarged and then accommodated two adults and two children.

The plans for the rooms during the Nazi time did not allow for much luxury. Two beds, a sink and not much space to move. Toilets and baths were communal. The plan was to host the masses since the party bosses would have had a little more luxury.

One impressive sight is the model that one can find inside the museum. Here one only realize how monstrous the entire construction actually was, unimaginable that this could have been the longest building on earth.

The Museum

Inside one of the buildings one can find a five floor museum that reflects on the time of the planning and building, post war times during the German Democratic Republic as well as the time after the fall of the iron curtain. The museum is a must see when visiting the island!

… and today this is also being used as the largest discotheque on the island of Ruegen. Some 2500 party goers fit into this massive club, not sure when it ever will be full since there are only some 3000 inhabitants living near by….

Behind the main buildings mirroring the kitchen/restaurant complex to the front the Nazi’s finished those buildings. The plan was to host entertainment and cinemas in those parts of the construction. And this did also happen – though not during the Nazi time but during the time the NVA occupied the building, when the building was home to the officers club.

The Reception

One each side of the buildings two large reception areas were planned in grandiose style. After all this was planned as the welcome area of the Hitler Holiday Home. Vans or a mini rail was also in mind to traffic the thousands of arrivals swiftly to their rooms. Also this part was never completed.

The Kitchen

Only the foundations of another planned structures ever emerged. The kitchens and restaurants connected to each of the accommodation buildings. The idea was – a kitchen in the basement, a restaurant in the middle, a café bar above it and entertainment such as bowling above, all squashed on four massive floors.

The Port

Within the original plans a mini port or landing quay was planned to have the KdF cruise ships dock and move people from resort to resort. Though the quay was never completed and one can only see the foundations of the structure.
