The Fountain of the Joy of Life is situated in University Square. It is a DDR monument to Rostock's rebirth after WWII. My guide told me that the East Germans have no body shyness - (hence the vast amount of nudist beaches on the Baltic coast) - and that this fountain with it's nude statues happily cavorting in the water, is known locally as "The Porn Fountain". In the summer, children can play in the fountain, but it isn't on in the winter. I guess it's even too chilly for those hardy Rostockers. Leave a Comment

by Mariajoy This fruit and veg stall is situated in front of the Tourist Information Office - which was closed on the day I visited ( 2nd Jan.) Normally it would be open on a Tuesday but it was having some kind of staff training day. Anyway, I was browsing a book shop and came across a humerous book called "Germany Laughs Again" - it was full of German jokes, (which are usually incomprehensible to most non-Germans :))) but this one made me laugh... (apart from anything else it was the only one I could understand!) Customer to fruit seller: "Are these apples German?" Fruit seller: "Do you want to eat them or talk to them?" Hahahahaahahh!!! Oh and I didn't buy any fruit or veg - I don't feel that my German skills are good enough even to communicate with a vegetable! Leave a Comment

Since the reunification of Germany, the buildings, streets, monuments etc etc of Rostock have been, and are still being, restored to their former glory. The grey, run down and shabby buildings are quickly becoming a thing of the past, although it is still possible to see evidence here and there. These gabled houses in New Market square have been carefully preserved and show how this city was once extremely prosperous and important in the Hanseatic league trading association. Leave a Comment

Photos: 1. People's Theater with reflections of the buildings across the street. 2. Lobby of the People's Theater. 3. In the Large Hall: seating, orchestra pit, curtain. 4. Logo of the People's Theater (Volkstheater). This city-owned theater, which is also subsidized by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has its own drama, opera and ballet ensembles and its own orchestra, the North German Philharmonic. In the 1980s, towards the end of the German Democratic Republic, around 700 people were employed by the theater. Now they have less than half that number. At last count there were 341 employees, including 21 actors, 17 opera singers, 36 choral singers, 15 ballet dancers, 83 orchestra musicians and 70 technicians. Still, it's a large and impressive organization for a city of 200,000 people, and they put on an extensive program of drama, musical theater, ballet and concerts -- despite ongoing controversies and impending budget cuts. The premiere I attended was very nearly sold out, and the performance was excellent. Leave a Comment

The walls of the former Heinkelwerke aircraft factory. It was here that the ejector seat was invented. The building was in the process of being demolished when, almost too late, the locals suddenly realised that this historic building should be preserved for posterity. Military aircraft production began here in 1933 with over 10,000 employees. Unfortunately this was the main reason why the city suffered so badly from allied bombing during WWII. It was successfully reconstructed after the war, but as you can see, it eventually closed and demolition began. These walls will be preserved as a monument. Leave a Comment

Taking their bows after the premiere by Nemorino All you loyal readers of my Paris Off the Beaten Path tips (thanks again to both of you!) may recall that in one of these tips I described the light satirical operettas known as "Offenbachiades", by the composer Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880). In his long career Offenbach wrote exactly 100 of these operettas, which were hugely successful in Paris in the 1850s, 60s and 70s. I have seen several of these "Offenbachiades", but the one I know best is La Péricole, because I saw it several times when the Frankfurt Opera staged it in 1998, and I saw it again at a small theater in Paris in the summer of 2008. On my third trip to Rostock in January 2009 it happened that the Volkstheater was doing its premiere of a new production of one of the most famous of these "Offenbachiades", Orpheus in the Underworld. Now the story of Orpheus is actually a tragedy which has been dealt with in numerous serious operas, beginning with Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo from the year 1607 -- one of the very first operas ever written. But Offenbach and his librettists changed the plot around to make it very funny, and the staging in Rostock was superb. At the end of the premiere everyone involved was warmly applauded, including the stage director Babette Bartz. Leave a Comment

by Mariajoy I had assumed that Ossi had been someone famous, but my friend informed me that as the streets of Rostock are renewed, more and more of these simple engraved paving stones are being laid as reminders of the ordinary Rostock inhabitants who were vicitims of the Holocaust. We discussed whether Ossi was an older man who had lived in the street between 1938-1942, (where we saw this plaque) but, sadly, the truth is, he was probably just a little 4 year old boy. I was told that there are other memorials like this around the city streets but this was the only one I saw. Leave a Comment Address: Altschmiedestrasse 26Directions: CentralWebsite: www.rostock.de

Kerkoffhaus by Mariajoy This beautifully decorative building was named after an old Rostock family and is today the local registry office and city archive. My host's parents were married in this building and she told me that a local custom for bachelors who, upon reaching their 30th birthday unmarried, must wash the steps of this building watched by friends and family and then kiss a virgin! Steintor by Mariajoy The best "Thing To Do" in Rostock is take your camera for a stroll around the city. It helps to have a friendly local with you but if you don't then a guide book and a good map will suffice. This is the 16th century Steintor, one of the city's gates which opens in a southerly direction. There is another but I didn't get to see it. The original gate was demolished and this one built in its place in Dutch Renaissance style. Leave a Comment

Theater im Stadthafen by Nemorino This historic building in the City Harbor has been renovated and turned into a small theater with exactly 200 seats. (In Frankfurt they would have left out the 200th seat because of fire department regulations, but here the cut-off point seems to be different.) This little theater belongs to the Volkstheater (People's Theater) and is used for smaller, alternative drama productions. Leave a Comment
