Feinste Regionalwaren: Locally sourced produce and lots more to discover
Feinste Regionalwaren, German for "finest regional products" already has a lovable old-fashioned name, one that creates images of crammed corner stores (the so-called Tante-Emma-Läden) filled with a mixture of tins and jars, of baskets full of vegetables and a small meat or cheese corner. This shop in the small town of Gingst in central Rügen is similar - packed to the brim with exquisite produce and groceries. Moreover, it sells local crafts, clothes and stationeries. While the prices are a bit higher than in the average supermarket, you get better quality. We bought some great chutneys here as well as an imported wine which tasted very good sitting on the beach one evening.
What to buy: Lots of people will go for local Sanddorn (seabuckthorn) products, such as juices, proseccos, jams, spreads etc. But it's also worth checking out the other preserves and chutneys as well as the crafts. Part of the shop is a pottery.
What to pay: a bit more than in the supermarket
several: Supermarkets open on Sundays
Unlike in most parts of Germany, Rügen's supermarkets are open on Sundays during high season. Pretty much every bigger supermarket in touristy parts of the island (mostly the north coast) will be open between 1pm and 6pm. This is very uncommon in Germany, as there are laws governing the opening times of shops, and these state that shops are closed on Sundays.
What to buy: whatever you need and can get from a supermarket
What to pay: supermarket prices
Fresh Fish in Saßnitz
When in Saßnitz, we went down to the harbor and met these men who had just returned from their fishing trip! The fish looked delicious - and definitely was as fresh as you could possibly get any!!!
Shopping in Bergen: Shopping in Bergen
Well, Rügen does not offer a lot of possibilities for shopping. In bigger towns, like in Bergen, are some department stores and small stores along the main streets.
