  • Roofed wicker beach chairs on Binz beach - Rügen
    Roofed wicker beach chairs on
    Binz beach
    by Gerrem
Strandkörbe or roofed wicker beach chairs are a very German tool on beaches. You can rent them on all public beaches. They are for use in sunshine, rain and even storm. They have a roof, so you are protected against sunburn, rain & winds. The all cost about 7,-- € some more, some less. If you rent them for more then a day you get a key so you can store your personal beach items. They also have little tables where you can put your food or books.

The Königsstuhl is a very famous chalk rock with a height of 118m, which can be seen from far away when sailing on the see. Formed in the ice age, the Kreidefelsen have a brilliant white colour and they are the most impressing place worth seeing on the Jasmund peninsula. Standing on the viewpoint on top of the Königsstuhl offers a gigantic view on the deep blue sea.

It is the longest building of Europe with a length of almost 5km and it is situated at one of the most lovely beaches on Rügen: Prora, a grey, old and run down colossus. Prora is worth a visit because of its unbelievable dimension and the dark history that lies within.
Hitler built this building in the 30s as a gigantic seaside resort for his people but it should have been more a demonstration of his power and uniformity of the German nation. Now it is a ruin.

Kap Arkona ist the north cap of Rügen, a beautiful little village with two lighthouses. To reach Kap Arkona you have to leave your car on the big parking place (fee!) in Puttgarten. From here it is a 2 km walk to Kap Arkona, the alternative is to rent a bike in Puttgarten. The smaller lighthouse was constructed by the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built in 1827. The lighthouse is open for tourists as a museum nowadays. The larger lighthouse tower with the red top was built in 1902 and is still warning ships on the see every 16 seconds.
Can you see the Island Moen on the north side of the East sea?

Binz is situates at the east coast of Rügen, not far from the capital Bergen. It is one of the most famous and the most beautiful seaside resorts on Rügen as it has a gigantic beach with fine clear sand, a modern promenade and many little shops, hotels and restaurants. The seaside of Binz is dominated by the Sea-Bridge and the great Kurhaus.
Moreover Binz is famous for the typical “Baederarchitektur” which is special in the seaside resorts (Baeder) in the Northeast of Germany

  • Chalk Cliffs (Victoria's view) - Rügen
    Chalk Cliffs (Victoria's
    view)
    by german_eagle
One of Rügen's major sights are the chalk cliffs. The most famous of them - and probably the most stunning - are located north of Sassnitz, in the National Park Jasmund.

Many people know the chalk cliffs from Caspar David Friedrich's picture - but this scenery is gone for ever. In spring 2005 the cliffs called "Wissower Klinken" collapsed. Only small relicts remained.

Anyway, further north from the "Wissower Klinken" you find the most dramatic scenery of the chalk cliffs called "Königsstuhl". It is in the heart of the National Park and you have to pay and entrance fee of 6 Euro to walk to the cliff - a true rip-off. I admit they built a National Park centre with exhibits on Geology, History, Flora and Fauna, but what if you just want to see the cliffs? Do what we did - turn right before paying at the cash desk and walk the so called round path to Victoria's view. The views are still better since you can have a look of the Königsstuhl cliff, not only the views FROM the Königsstuhl cliff!

The views are amazing especially if you have good luck and the sun comes out ... we had for a short while. The contrast of the whilte chalk cliffs, the green woods and the blue water/sky was amazing (Please see the opening pic on my Rügen page!).

Drive to the big parking ground in Hagen (small fee) from where a shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes to the entrance of the National Park centre. There is also a public bus from Sassnitz, but it doesn't run very often. Another option is to take a boat (runs on schedule) from Binz, Sellin, Sassnitz to see the cliffs from the sea.

  • Sea-Bridge of Sellin - Rügen
    Sea-Bridge of Sellin
    by m-joy
Sellin is a seaside resort with a very special atmosphere. It is known for its famous old fashioned Sea-Bridge with some cafes on it. The centre of Sellin lies 40m above on top of steep cliffs from which you have a magnificent view on the sea and the bridge. The main street in Sellin is the Wilhelmstraße in which you find small shops and cafes but brilliant old villas, build in the Bäderachitecture-style.

    Beaches and Seabridges

  • Sellin (beach and seabridge) - Rügen
    Sellin (beach and
    seabridge)
    by german_eagle
Another good reason to go to Rügen are the many kilometres of (white) sandy beaches and the seabridges leading some hundred metres into the sea. Such seabridges were built in the early 20th centuries, some of them have restaurants (Sellin) and at each of them stop ferries which take you to other villages and towns (Binz, Sellin, Göhren).

The beaches are very beautiful, but please notice that the water is usually quite cold. It rarely warms up to more than 20 Celsius, when I was there end of May it was 13/14 Celsius. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Anyway, it is fun to lie down in the sand and relax, play some volleyball of frisbee or whatever - given the co-operating weather :-)

A time of phantasies in the amazing world of submarine!
Her Majesty´s Submarine Otus of the British Oberon Class, served for 28 years in the 1st Submarine Squadron of the British Royal Navy.
The submarine was built in 1963, surved with 68 crew members in Falkland War and 1991 in Persian Gulf War.
Now the boat is in Sassnitz on Rügen. You can visit all days 10 am - 4 am (winter time) or 10 am - 7 pm, April - October.

It was an adventure to be inside, look for the technic and have the feeling to be under water. I was excited, thrilled to be there. But I can say, never I could stay only a day inside with the knowledge to be under water in true!

I shot so much pitctures that I have to put inside an extra album.

Website is also in English language with technical details and very interesting pictures about history and technical stuff of Otus.
