A brewpub will always grab my attention and this is a particularly good one!
Arrived a little after 7pm and very lucky to find the last table, that's a good sign. Firstly tried a couple of the house made beers a light and a dark, prefered the light but both enjoyable. Now the food, a treat here a schnitzel for me and prawn speiss (on sticks) for herself. Portions large and very tasty, service fast, friendly and helpful all at a reasonable price.
Memorable visit.

Great place for us to sit outside and watch comings and goings on Am Markt, and a good place for lunch too.
Mrs B especially enjoyed a vegetarian plate (for a change!) both meals pretty tasty and reasonably priced - enjoyed.

Brauhaus am Lohberg: Microbrewery and restaurant

The microbrewery recently celebrated its 555th anniversary. Food is good and abundant and the house-brewed beers are worth trying. Pils and the dark brown Mumme are done all year round, in addition to those they do seasonal specialities. To tell the truth, I owe my knowledge of this restaurant to tips here on VT.

The interior has a very German pub atmosphere with dark oakwood. In summer, weather permitting, you can sit outside in front of the restaurant with a view of Wassertor and the old houses. Am Lohberg is a car-free street, so this is a pleasant spot.

Favorite Dish: I had pork loans - a big dish and very good. I didn't feel like having fish that night. The place is well known for its fish dishes.

The favourite is, of course, the beer...

Café Fürstenhof: Cosiest cafe garden in town

Café Fürstenhof
If you want a cosy place to rest, have an excellent coffee and home-made cake, or a big ice-cream, here is a little café with a very special ambience and unique atmosphere. In summer you sit in the back garden on the lawn under apple and cherry trees, look at the façade of Georgenkirche behind the trees and have a chat with the neighbours’ cats that come visiting as soon as food is served. It feels like being someone’s house guest, sitting in the orchard and being pampered with home-made goodies.
At first sight the place seems to be the idea of someone who had a house in town and no job and thought of some way to make a living – ok let’s open a garden café. However, a closer look reveals that the place is very well professionally managed.

How to find it? The place is a bit hidden but it is worth looking for! Take the small street between the Ducal Palace (Fürstenhof) and St George’s Church. There is a park on the left and a row of houses on the right, one of them has a few tables out in the street and the “Café” sign. You can also walk through the gateway of the Ducal Palace, the café has put up a sign in the yard of Fürstenhof that points you to the right direction through the little park behind. To reach the garden, walk through the house – it is a narrow passage round some corners, follow the signs to the “Garten”.

Dinner

This wonderfully huge, typical German Brauhaus, celebrating its 555th anniversary in 2007, was the venue we chose to meet up with a group of friends for dinner. The decor is typical rustic German with wooden floors, tables oak beams and fireplace etc etc and there was a warm friendly greeting from staff. A really good place to go on a cold December night!

Favorite Dish: I had the grilled salmon on a bed of spinach with wild rice. The vegetarian choices were really quite varied but fish is their speciality. Of course there is a wide selection of beers too and I had a *red* beer but can't remeber the name of it!

I only spent a few hours in the historic Hansestad Wismar, just for dinner and a walk, but I'm so glad I had even this short visit. For more information about the city of Wismar check the link.

Wismar is an old port at the Baltic Sea. I liked the old streets and renovated houses there....You sometimes will also find some signs of the past GDR days here, like on this pic of the public bath......
