Views from the obelisk

The so-called 'Canossa-Saule', an obelisk erected in 1877 in honor of Otto von Bismarck and his saying 'Nach Canossa gehen wir nicht' (“We will not go to Canossa”) is another must see. The views of the city from here are very nice.

Bismarck holds his much-quoted speech to show he is resolved to gain the upper hand over the Catholic Church. The phrase "We shall not go to Canossa" reflects Protestant pride in the newly unified Germany and the belief that the Roman church and the Catholic powers over Europe, including Habsburg Austria, had held Germany back from fulfilling it's political destiny.

Autumn in Bad Harzburg

It is definitley worth walking up this hill above Bad Harzburg. The incline is no problem especially if you take your time and the paths are extremely well maintained.

At the top you will find the ruins of an 11th Century fortress built by Heinrich IV. There are some very nice views of the town from ths vantage spot and also a very nice little restaurant to have a coffee or a bite to eat.

There is also the possibilty of catching the cable car to the Burgberg and skip the walk altogether. It has been operating since 1929 and is Germany’s northernmost large-cabin cable car (482 m/1581 ft).

It was extremely nice to walk through the centre of this quaint town. Plenty of interesting shops and buildings to admire and lots of nice places to sit back and enjoy a coffee as well. Bonus!! Dont feel like coffee? No problem, enjoy some delicious mulled wine instead. Some interesting decorative hedging was sprinkled through the centre which was also quite nice.

You will find the tourist information centre here also at 86 Herzog-Wilhelm-Str.

Opening hours of the tourist information are:

Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 8.00 pm
Saturday 9.00 am – 4.00 pm
Sunday, holidays: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm

If you are doing any hiking whist in Bad Harzburg you can find some very good maps here.

I caught the train here and it was extremely comfortable and efficient (as trains usually are in Germany) and only a short walk from the centre of town.

Tank speed sign

Favorite thing: I have seen a few of these around Germany before but this was my first opportunity to take a happy snap. I dont know about you but this may be one of the only parts fo the world where you will find speed limits for tanks!!

Fondest memory: This honestly made my day and every time I see it I just have to smile. You wont find one of these back at home in Oz , they are more of the watch out for kangaroos variety.
