This large lake is the main sight of interest when visiting Bad Zwischenahn. Covering an area of 5.5 sq km, the lake is the third largest inland lake in the state of Lower Saxony. It is a great place to relax on a lakeside bench while enjoying the views. The more active can cycle or walk the lakeside paths or go sailing on the lake. The open air pursuits available make Zwischenahner Meer a more desirable destination to visit in summer months.

The historical farm museum features buildings that stood in the local area between 1910 and 1941. A windmill is located next to the 14 open air farm buildings. You can take a look inside the buildings to discover their different uses, eg. barns, blacksmiths, agricultural storage. Wandering around the open air museum is free but at least one of the auxiliary buildings charges admission. A shop close to the lake and open air museum sells drinks, food and ice-creams and there are toilet facilities also available here.

A local legend states that a giant catfish up to 3 and a half metres in length is at large somewhere in the watery depths of Zwischenahner Meer. To commemorate this legend, a bronze statue can be found opposite the church in Bad Zwischenahn. Is this Germany's answer to the Loch Ness Monster, perhaps?!
