Bensersiel Things to Do

  • Esens

Esens is a town about 8 km from Bensersiel. It's not big but has a nice old town. Most sights were closed when were there, opening times in winter are always a problem! There's a church St Magnus with a tower museum, next to it is a holography museum () and there's also a wind mill with a museum "Leben am Meer" (live at the sea). There are several...

  • Benser Tief

The "river" that you see on that photo is not really a river but a drainage canal. Along the fields there are small ditches and the water from there goes into larger ditches and canals until it reachs on of the towns with a "Siel"/ tide gate. These canals are the only way to get rid of all the water as along the whole coast there are dikes which...

  • Spa gardens

As Bensersiel is a spa town it of course also has a spa garden. It's very small, with a little lake, and dates from 1981. The garden is called "Von Thünen-Park", after two sisters who gifted the property and whose last name is "von Thünen". It's a nice place, but looks a bit dreary in winter - and the sea always is much nicer!

  • Nordseetherme (thermal bath)

Bensersiel also has a thermal bath with several swimming pools. It's not that big and I can imagine that in summer at bad weather it gets very full, but in November it was empty. So we had enough space for swimming and could enjoy the pool with the massage jets whenever we wanted. For children there's a separate pool, and a 100m slide. There's also...

  • Old tide gate

The word "siel" in the town name Bensersiel means "tide gate". There are many such town names in East Frisia that end with "siel". These tide gates are gates in the dike and they serve for the drainage of the bogland more south. There are currently two gates in Bensersiel, and off the main street you will find an old one that was found in 1967...

  • Wattenmeer (wadden sea/ tideland)

The Wadden Sea is the seabed that is free of water during low tide, and it's all along the German North Sea coast, extending also to the west in the Netherlands. The coast there is very flat, and so at low tide the sea is far far away. It's really faszinating to see this big difference between the tides here. You even can walk to some islands that...

Bensersiel Restaurants

  • Good restaurant near the harbour

The café and restaurant Waterkant is found next to the harbour. We had a late lunch there which was really good. You can get various fish dishes here, but after I saw that they have Grünkohl (kale - see my local custom tip) I had to take this! I had the kale-potatoes-feta-casserole which was delicious while my friend had matjes (pickled herring)...

  • Nicest cakes ever!

The restaurant is a bit old-fashioned, though you can find the most amazing tasting cake for few Euros. The service is very familiar and you have a good look to the North Sea. The cake I had was huge and only 1,80 Euro(which you already pay in a bakery nowadays). Apple Cake-yummy!

You can either take the highway A31 (Emden), then the B210 to Aurich and from there to Esens & Bensersiel, or you take the highway A29, then the B210 also and go to Bensersiel via Jever, Wittmund and Esens.
There are several car parks in Bensersiel, from what I saw all pay & display. When were there all the ticket machines were missing, so maybe in winter it's always free.

There's no train station in Bensersiel, but on in Esens from where you can take the bus to Bensersiel. Trains of the Nordwestbahn will go to Esens from Oldenburg or Wilhelmshaven; can can check for your optimal connection on the website www.bahn.de.

Bensersiel has a little shopping arcade with several small shops. They all were closed in November but did open again in December. Downstairs is a Markant supermarket which is not big but you can get almost everything there. There's also a small car park at the street Alter Sielweg. If you want to have more choice you need to go to Esens where you have several supermarkets, among them the large Combi supermarket (Auricher Str. 45).

Bensersiel Local Customs

  • Grünkohl (green cabbage/ kale)

In North Germany there's a whole culture around kale. They have "kale tours" where a group of people makes a longer walk to a restaurant where they eat kale. To make that walk more fun the do some games on their walk also, and they take a handcart with alcoholic drinks with them. It's something typically done in autumn or winter, as that's the...

  • Esens and the bears

When walking around in Esens, you will see quite a lot of colourful bears ("buddy bears") standing around, often in front of shops with the companys logo on it. They date from 2002 when Esens got 475 years old.The bear also is found on the coat of arms, and there's the following legend: In the medieval times when the town was besieged, there was a...
