This Paulaner house in the town centre has a cosy atmosphere with quirky decor. During our visit they had the fire blazing in the corner (albeit a videotape version on a TV screen).
We sat under a couple of stuffed squirrels. With bared fangs...and wings...and webbed feet. It must be a jest of local folklore, a bit like the 'jackalopes' of Kansas which are supposed to be a cross between antelopes and jack rabbits.
And when a platter of food came by for a diner, we noticed it was nothing more than a wooden cutting board with piles of meat and cheese arranged on it. A bit rustic, maybe, but refreshingly unpretentious.
As for the beer...! They had three varieties of Munich's Paulaner, the pils (lager), hefeweizen (wheat beer, reminiscent of Hoegaarden) and the delicious dunkel (dark bitter). It was a bit dear at 3.40 euro for each half litre of dunkel, but the fun atmosphere and great taste was worth it.
The fire may have been fake, but the welcome was warm!
