on this photo you see a part of the wall how it probably has been constructed in the year 9 AD. In the background you see the tower of the museum,

On the photo you see in the background a closed area where parts of the landscape and constructions as they have been 2000 years ago are reconstructed. For me one of the most fascinating efforts of the archeologists has been to recognize an artificial wall that has been constructed by the german tribes to protect themselves during the battle with the romans.

First the exhibiton of Varus last battle has been in the old "farm" building that is nowa days only the entrance and souvenir shop zone of the museum. On the photo you see the tower from where you have a goodview over the whole area where the battle most probably took place.

Just in the entrance zone there are two possibilites to have a snack or a real lunch. There is a self service location where you can get your coke or beer and your sausage with french fries to sit outdoor or a little restaurant just next to it with indoor/outdoor service.

just next to the cash desk in the entrance building you find a liitle space where to buy souvenirs just as t-shirts, postcards or coffee cups and as well some food and drinks in typical german tribes style as for example a honey wine called "Met".

This work from Axel Gundrum is placed in the entrance zone of the museum.

It shall be understood as a kind of warning of a backslide in a mental middle age at which end , armed with chemical, biological and atomic weappons of mass destructions, the end of human culture stands (part of a citation of Axel Gundrum, 2003, traduced from german by myself).

    Axel Gundrum:
    born 1953 in Hagen/West, Germany
1982 studies of design in Osnabrück
since 1990 member of the "Künstlersonderbund für Realismus in Deutschland (union of artists for realism in Germany)
exhibitions in Germany and in foreign countries

this golf court seems to be still in plans. there was nothing to see, besides looks quite strange this sign next to a cultural place like the Varus battle ground.

Favorite thing: In may 2003 there will be a special exhibition about Theodor Mommsen who has been one of the first to say that this battle has taken place near Kalkriese when he saw the first coin finds. This was more than 120 years ago. The exhibition starts in memory of the 100th year of death of Theodor Mommsen. (btw, Mommsen is from Osnabrück)

Favorite thing: In the year 9 AD a not known number of german tribes have won a big battle against 3 legiones of roman soldiers near the Kalkriese hill. This was the biggest victory of german tribes.
