Osnabrück Things to Do

  • Theater Osnabrück

There has been a municipal theater in Osnabrück since 1832. The current main theater building was built from 1905 to 1909 – at a time when many medium-sized cities in Germany were building their city theaters. The Osnabrück Theater was damaged by bombing during the Second World War, but was re-built from 1949 to 1950. It currently seats 642...

I am now one of the very few people in the world who have seen two different productions of the opera Simplicius Simplicissimus by Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963). The first was Christoph Nel’s production in Stuttgart and Frankfurt, starring Claudia Mahnke and Frank van Aken (I saw it in Frankfurt) and the second was a staging by Jochen Biganzoli...

Osnabrück Restaurants

  • PollyEsther’s

This is a casual café and restaurant in a modern building right in the center of Osnabrück. The location couldn’t be better – in a pedestrian zone right across from the theater – and the food was fine.As usual I forgot to note down what I ate, but it was okay whatever it was. Presumably the café is run by two ladies named Polly and Esther, whose...

  • Café and Bar Celona

This is a pleasant and very popular café and bar in the center of Osnabrück. The best thing about it is the location, on a little square just a block away from the theater. The atmosphere is supposedly Mediterranean – that’s why it’s called Bar Celona, get it? – but to me it seemed more German than anything else. They have coffee and cake and all...

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are staying in a military area which is on high alert, be prepared for military personnel checking their cars before you get into them. Also security can be tight when trying to enter a British base.
