The Ratskeller was build in 1621 by Walter Jakob Kohler. It was than partly townhall and brewery. The house was used as townhall until 19th century. In the wall you can still see the city arms. Today it is the second oldest house of Stadtoldendorf.
The Peinecke House is the oldest, that still exists in Stadtoldendorf. It was build in 1602 by Hans Tusken. It shows a very beautiful painted fassade. It is located on market square in the city center.
Wilhelm Raabe (1831 - 1910) was a famous German poet. He was born near Stadtoldendorf and spent his childhood in Stadtoldendorf. He wrote novels which focus on German history. He was also an artist, who painted some not so well known landscapes.
Stadtoldendorf is very proud of its famous citizen and shows his house.
As long as most cities and villages did not have tab-water, the public fountains were the source of fresh water. This very important monument was always located in central places. The public fountain of Stadtoldendorf can still be seen on the Marketsquare. It had been rebuild in 1893. The column is from 1951. But it is on the place, where already in the Middleages the city fountain was.
Like all old cities in Germany Stadtoldendorf has a central marketsquare. It has been renovated an shows some old and beautiful halftimbered houses. The marketsquare was the central place, where people came together to chat. It is still a place, where you can sit in the sun, have a beer and admire the old houses around.
Stadtoldendorf had a very strong citywall. About 800m of it can still be seen today. The Foersterhausturm is the most significant tower of the old fortifications. It is located on a hill overlooking the city and the valley.
