Approx. 600 gaudy and exotic butterflies flutter in the midst of a tropic flora. The gorgeous colourings of the butterflies captivate everyone. With a bit luck one can watch a butterfly slipping out of its cocoon. Furthermore the museum of insects shows a wide range of huge insects in terrariums. A further impression of the world of insects can be...more
We visited Museum der Traditionsgemeinschaft Lufttransport Wunstorf e. V. which is rather known as Ju-52 Halle, quite early in the morning. We were lucky that the very friendly guardsperson opened the doors, took time out of his schedule and provided us patiently with detailed informations. Touching experience.more
This Italian Cafe sits right at Steinhude's pedestrian zone, and is there for free of any noisy traffic-surroundings. It's a very comfortable, cosy and nice place. Also one can do that ppl watching thing if one likes to, as the pedestrian zone has always ppl coming along and passing by Approdo's. Cafe offers various goodies such as ice cream,...more
Restaurant Alter Winkel is a nice and cosy location. Not only hotel-guests are dining there but locals and other visitors as well. Service and waiters are very friendly, particulary towards children, and serve their customs fast. We deceided to choose from the local Steinhuder Meer specials such as the meals are, that base on eel. Had smooked eel,...more
Smoked eel is a big thing in Steinhude and its Steinhuder Meer. Sounds a bit funny to have a Weserbergland area considering smoked eel as their special. Then again this Steinhude special is a nice add to the local, sort of Baltic Sea flair. As a matter of fact the countless eel booths do suit Steinhude & lake quite good. And their eel sandwiches do taste good.

Most all of the local restaurants offer this so called delicacy. Besides the thought or the look of Eel who would eat it. A friend, Bill, did try it and said it was AWFUL. Bill normally has a liking for everything and most all things but, not this one!
We did enjoy our stay in Steinhude, where we were there visiting from the Hannover Messe and the restaurants were good too. Nice spot though, I would not recommend swimming in the lake, where we understood the Eels are from.
Haven't shopped there yet the store caught my attention due to its lovely painting and the plants in the front yard. It's a store that seems to sell spiritual related items. And probably decoration too. I couldn't find any sources that would provid the shop's address or what exactly they offer. It's located pretty close to Hotel Seinsche/Steinhude.more
Photo shows a house (Am Anger 3, Steinhude) with a sign saying Oldest House in Steinhude back of about 1600. Haven't found out of which use it is today or what the story is to that house. Nowadays it couldt be a restaurant or guesthouse? Speaking of Steinhude's old, half timbered houses, and its extra ordinary recreational environment, I found the...more
Steinhuder Meer is considered a natural attraction located to the west of Hanover. This is the biggest stretch of inland water, with a surface area of 32 sq. km, and is the sailing, sailboarding and bathing centre of the region of Weserbergland and Lower Saxony. There are a wide range of watersports on offer at the lake, which makes it a great place for the whole family to have some fun. There is also a nature reserve near the lake for those who would rather take a relaxing walk through nature.
