wadde sea - das Wattenmeer by Gerrem If you climbed up onto an embankment somewhere on the North Sea coast to take a look at the sea, you could be in for a disappointment - there's not a drop of water to be seen! Instead a broad, barren flatness stretches away before you. But don't panic, the North Sea will be back - in the Wadden Sea, the water ebbs and flows twice a day, in a six hour cycle. Giving rise, between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark, to a 10,000 square kilometre large wetland, the like of which is found nowhere else in the world. If you once walked through the wadden sea barefoot you will return. It’s a great experience. As a child I often walked there and I loved it. But: you have to be careful. Don’t walk to far away from the coast. If the tide is coming the water is faster than you can run. Every year people have to be rescued by helicopters and sometimes people are drowning. In order to protect this natural landscape on Niedersachsen's North Sea coast, the area was made a conservation area in 1986. The 288,000 hectare Niedersachsen Wadden Sea national park covers the tidal flats between the rivers Ems and Elbe, including the East Friesian islands lying just off the coast. The visitor can experience impressive natural displays and landscapes, such as the characteristic salt marshes, the steep bank at Dangast or the "floating moorland" at Sehestedt - the only surviving piece of the ancient moorland regularly invaded by the sea in Germany. Numerous animal and plant species live in the Wadden Sea national park. These include seals, which are easily observed on their sand banks, but also smaller creatures, such as the famous lugworm, which you might come across on a tidal flats walk at low tide. Brocken mountain by Gerrem The Harz mountains are only 1 1/2 hour by car away from my hometown Elze. In summer you can have long walks there and in winter you can skiing there. The highest mountai is named Brocken and is about 1000 m high. Dense mountain forests, bizarre rocky gullies, mysterious caves, roaring waterfalls... the landscape of the Harz mountains has many guises. Rare plants and animals that you won't come across anywhere else are found here. The shy wild cat, for example, the capercaillie, owls, kingfishers and black storks are still native. Experience unspoilt nature - in the Harz! The Harz mountains, Germany's most northerly mountain range, is situated in the south of Niedersachsen, stretching into parts of the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Deep valleys, mountains with acres and acres of deciduous and coniferous forests and rugged rocks alternating with gentle hills, colourful mountain meadows and clear lakes characterise the Harz landscape. Famous people such as Martin Luther, Heine and Goethe appreciated the Harz mountains and their variety. You can walk in the footsteps of kings and emperors, discover world-class cultural highlights or enjoy the beauty of nature in our two national parks in the Harz. I love the Harz! Leave a Comment

Hanover main station & the statue of Ernst August by Gerrem Hannover, the capital of Lower Saxony is about 30 km away from my hometown Elze. It has about half a million habitants Main city in the green, fair city, sports city and city of the Expo 2000 – Hannover was and is engaged with a lot of attributes. But none of them can reflect the different faces of the city all in one. Hannover has many sights, international flair, numerous events and exhibitions for any age or taste to offer. In the metropolis life pulsates all year: from the uproarious spring festival up to the romantic Christmas Market. And summer of course is the main season. For me, my family and friends it is also our “shopping city”. There are many many chances to spent your money… If you come to Germany you have to come here and see and feel it by yourself. Allosaurus. Muriel and I by Gerrem Discover the history of the earth along a 2.5 km trail. The outdoor exhibition is highlighted by about 150 life-size models of dinosaurs, including the terrible Allosaurus and the 45 m long Seismosaurus, the largest dinosaur Model on earth. The models illustrate the evolutoin of this fascinating group of extinct animals. The trackside is located halfwayalong the trail. In the year 1980 dinosaur tracks were found in the "Wesling" firm´s quarry east of Münchehagen near Rehburg. The tracks were discovered during a fire-brigade practice which laid open the bottom of the quarry. On this occasion deep prints were cleaned from mud, which were known but ignored until that day. After the cleaning it was stated that surprisingly nearly 250 prints existed. Also it became clear that the prints formed several tracks which seemed to be from dinosaurs, living here in former times. Leave a Comment

Heide Parks big wooden rollercoaster by Gerrem Heide Park is just amazing! It's located in Soltau in the "Lueneburger Heide", between Hamburg and Hannover, in North Germany. It is the largest Amusement Park of North Germany (850,000 square meters!). It has more than 50 attractions. The park is scenically, and its maintained facilities are brilliant. In a wildlife park you can observe in a nature-left and kind-fair environment over 200 native animals. These animals are described as the "real stars of the show". By the way, the Heide Park has the biggest wood roller coaster of the world! Pay one entrance fee and enjoy whatever you like. Okay, you still have to pay for some events, but most attractions are free after you paid the entrance fee. The heath in full bloom by Gerrem I studied in Lüneburg for 4 ½ years and lived in the middle of the Lüneburger Heath. If you once have seen the heath in its full bloom you will always love it. Traditionally, the heath can be seen at its best in late summer from mid-August to late-September when it is usually in full bloom. Some 'heath specialists', however, prefer springtime or autumn when the yellow gleam of rape fields or the bright colours of leaves create an atmosphere of serenity. Diversity is the trump card of the 'Lüneburg Heath'. There is so much more to enjoy than just watching the German moorland sheep and the Heath is looked upon as a perfect example of an idyllic vacation area. The region offers biking, hiking, horse-riding, watersports and golfing opportunities and its long history can be seen and learned about in the various castles, villages, museums and even traditional dishes. You might fall in love with the 'Lüneburg Heath' -as I did- and you will be happy that you did not miss the chance to get to know such an idyllic, diverse and interesting part of the world. Einhornhöhle near Scharzfeld by nepalgoods Harz Mountains are the highest mountains in the south of Lower Saxony. Beautiful forests are ideal for hiking and biking. In Winter it is possible to ski. In the caves of the Harz we found proof, that already the Neanderthal Men lived here. On the meadows between the forest you'll find many rare plants like orchids. Leave a Comment

Typical Farmhouse in Wendland by nepalgoods Wendland, the Country of the Wend, named after a Slavic tribe, which lived there from about 1500 years ago until modern times. Today, there does no distinct Slavic population exist. But the special way of building circular villages still reminds us of their way of living. After WWII, the Wendland became an almost forgotten area at the border to the GDR. Wendland was only mentioned in the news, when there was another riot or strike at Gorleben, where the ultimate dispostion of nuclear waste is planned. The border divided the Wendland into two parts. There has been almost nothing more sad to see as this border, which fortunately has almost vanished now. Wendland is today one of most lovely places in Germany with cosy little villages, small towns and wide farmland. Leave a Comment
