    Iron Curtain memories

Wolfsburg was at 'spitting distance' from the old East German border and so, you used to be able to go and see the border crossings. The wall ran along the whole border as a depressing snake. Today, a bit of the wall is preserved outside the neighbouring town of Helmstedt (see that page) and it is well worth visiting. They say they have removed the mines but nevertheless don't recommend you to leave the foot path as you walk along a piece of wall with watch towers and barbed wire posts. For me, it is weird since I saw the real thing with guards pointing guns at us and dogs barking and it can never show the real thing but it is a great memorial.

    Fallersleben village

Fallersleben is a nice old village just outside town (there are local buses) with Wolfgang von Fallersleben's birth house (the man who wrote Deutschland, Deutschland which you can see written in gold on the woodwork) as in the picture. The village also has a wonderful brewery in an old farmhouse (see tip). The warm pretzels are to die for and the beer won't disappoint!

    Town view and picnic

The hill behind the hospital is the place. I can't remember the name now but it has a war memorial and above all, good views of town and the surroundings. It also has a tiny animal enclosure which isn't very impressive but could be good if you find yourself stuck in WOB with children.

  • Winterlicht - the winter...

Winterlicht - the winter festival in the Autostadt... This took place in winter 2001/2002 and it was a lovely idea. There was a hill for snowboarding/tobbogganing, you could build snow sculptures, go ice skating, climb a tower of ice or just enjoy the winter atmosphere....

it is near Wolfsburg (and Gifhorn too); an artificially created lake. But in the warm summer it is nice place to sun bathe, to drink beer, and to have some sandwiches.
