Alvar Aalto architecture

Alvar Aalto architecture, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  There are several buildings designed by Finnish top class architect Aalto in town, in fact more than anywhere else outside Finland. One is the Alvar Aalto Cultural House downtown and another is the Holy Ghost church near the hospital. There is also a community centre in the...

Wolfsburg Castle

Wolfsburg Castle, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  Alt-Wolfsburg, i.e. Old Wolfsburg, is the area where the village that gave the town its name stood and you can still visit the old castle - the reason all VW beetles had a wolf in a castle on their steering wheels. The museum mentioned above is also in the castle grounds and...

Autostadt

Autostadt, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  Autostadt is THE sight in town. Volkswagen's huge exhibition centre where you can do everything from pick up your newly bought car in a glass tower (see shopping tip) to a guided tour of the factory and, in between, see old models of the VW and their associates' cars. Not...

Autostadt: Your new car is waiting!

Autostadt: Your new car is waiting!, Wolfsburg

Gerrem Says:  Anyone considering buying a new car usually does a lot of careful research before coming to the realization: this is it! At Autostadt, I think the moment in which you receive your new car should be just as special. And this is exactly what they offer. At Autostadt,...

Brauhaus Fallersleben: Village brewery

Brauhaus Fallersleben: Village brewery, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  This historical old brewery in a barn-like building right in the middle of Fallersleben is undoubtedly my favourite WOB haunt. Lovely atmosphere since you sit in a brewery in an old farmhouse. There is space for lots of people but it still feels like you know them all. NOTE...

Cylinder: Car cities "American way of life"

Cylinder: Car cities "American way of life", Wolfsburg

Gerrem Says:  Located in the ZeitHaus museum, the Cylinder pays homage to the "American way of life." As you down a Cylinder burger or tortillas, you feel you've been transported back to the fifties in a vintage Airstream trailor. The interior is dynamically shaped, the steps replaced by...

Transportation

Around town

Around town, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  Wolfsburg's public transport means buses. They run to most places in towns and to suburban villages, although not that frequent. This is a car manufacturing town...everyone gets driving licenses as soon as they can.

The Autobahn

The Autobahn, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  The A2 Autobahn to and from Berlin passes by and it's not far from Hannover if you drive. As much as I dislike car dependency, this really is the way to arrive in Autostadt Wolfsburg :))) The German Autobahns were even built especially to get Volkswagens up and down the...

A huge glass tower is home to your car-to-be until you pick it up. Oh, the exitement when your car is driven down the spiral tower...:-) You can combine picking up your car with a stay in the swanky Ritz Carlton hotel within the Autostadt compound to make it a whole car holiday.

What to buy: Volkswagens

What to pay: Depends on model :)

sabsi Says:  All signs in the Autostadt as well as in the Zeithaus are in German and in English. Unfortunately non German speakers can't enjoy the pavilions too much - because the spoken language is German everywhere.

1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sjalen 3561 reviews

Wolfsburg isn't a dangerous place as such but since people are constantly on and off shifts at the VW factory you will find more drugs here than in many German towns. You will also find that because it was along the old border with East Germany, there are some tensions between 'Easterners and Westerners' in the odd nightclub so the two in combination might want you to watch your wits, that's all.

On the picture you can see former German ice skating champions Ingo Steuer and Mandy Woetzel at the ice rink of the Autostadt. They became famous during the Olympics in Nagano(?) when he held her hands, she fell over and hit the ice with her chin ;)... Unfortunately they didn't show this trick in the Autostadt ;-)

Fallersleben village

Fallersleben village, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  Fallersleben is a nice old village just outside town (there are local buses) with Wolfgang von Fallersleben's birth house (the man who wrote Deutschland, Deutschland which you can see written in gold on the woodwork) as in the picture. The village also has a wonderful...

Town view and picnic

Town view and picnic, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  The hill behind the hospital is the place. I can't remember the name now but it has a war memorial and above all, good views of town and the surroundings. It also has a tiny animal enclosure which isn't very impressive but could be good if you find yourself stuck in WOB with...

Bundesliga football

Bundesliga football, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  A game of football if that's your cup of tea. Wolfsburg is in Bundesliga and they have built a brand new stadium for the team in the Allerpark. Stefan Effenberg has been playing for them and there are usually some players from national teams around central Europe in the...

A stroll

A stroll, Wolfsburg

Sjalen Says:  A tour around town is interesting just to show how huge the Volkswagen factory is (although that's even more obvious seen from the town's high lying parts and villages). Its chimneys can be seen in several places around town as can the lit up blue VW in the dark. Walking...

This sign is on the car park..., Wolfsburg

sabsi Says:  This sign is on the car park in front of the Autostadt - you better do what it says!!! 'If I stood in front of your door with a Lamborghini, Ultralight, horse,... would you still come with me?' and questions like that for lunch!
