This restaurant was a suggestion by the hotel concierge and it turned out to be quite good.

Located right in the center very close to the city hall, it is a relatively large German family-style restaurant.

We all had meat and were all happy with it. Huftsteak, Entrecote and Filet Mignon, were all quite tender (oviously there is a difference in quality between the meats - Filet Mignon being the most tender) and well-cooked.
There is a sallad buffet that goes with all mains and it was actually quite good, with a lot of variety.

Service was OK, although a bit slow at occasions.

At 51 Eur for 3 people, I think it it is was reasonably priced.

On a cold and rainy day, after a long journey and a lot of foot slogging, this funky little cafe-bar was a great find. It was warm, friendly, had great music playing and it seemed to be very popular with locals. Definitely my kind of place!!

Oh and take a few minutes to visit the loos downstairs - very cool! By the way, be careful on the stairs- on the day we were there, rain was coming in through the ceiling and dripping quite heavily on to them. The staff had tried to leave a towel there to mop it up but it was soaked and there was water everywhere. Quite a safety hazard really.

"Man trifft sich immer zweimal im Leben.
    Und einmal davon im Egmont."

Check out their great website for more info and photos.

It has to be the Kakao! It was fabulous, had a HUGE topping of cream and sprinkled with more chocolate and at 2 Euro a glass you could have several - but one will fill you up and give you the energy to carry on shopping for the rest of the day!

    Fast Food

The Christmas market is full of stalls selling lots of traditional German fast food - namely sausage and chips!! You can get a Bratwurst or Bockwurst in a bread roll and chips with mayo or ketchup for a few Euro. Chips on their own cost 2E for a medium portion. Knockwuerste and Knackwuerste are also German sausages but may or may not be available in the Christmas market.

Being a veggie I just had the chips - and mayo "mmmmmm" :) Lovely to warm your hands on a paper cone filled with hot chips on a cold winter's day!

On my first night in Aachen, I met with VTer Stef (TinyTuck) and her two friends, Alex and Alex. We had dinner at the Brauerei Goldener Schwan on the Markt overlooking the Rathaus. To eat, Stef and I enjoyed "German tapas". For a fixed price, you get a sample portion of five different dishes. I liked this choice because it afforded me the opportunity to sample a bunch of different local specialties.

One Alex was a vegetarian -- and the other described herself as a "restaurant vegetarian" (first time I heard that one!). Since most of the German tapas dishes had meat, they ordered Flammkuchen (which is a like a thin pizza) topped with vegetables.

To drink, we enjoyed Dom Kölsch. Since Aachen is relatively close to Cologne, many restaurants and bars serve Kölsch which is the local beer of Cologne.

If you want to try a few different German specialities while in Aachen, the German tapas at the Brauerei Goldener Schwan is a good choice!

On my first afternoon in Aachen, I ate lunch at a small restaurant called Pomm"Pös on Krämerstraße near the Rathaus. I ordered currywurst and fries. In addition to the curry sauce, the bratwurst was topped with crunchy dried onion bits.

This currywurst order was the third on my trip. While the currywurst was very good in both Cologne and Düsseldorf, this one at Pomm"Pös in Aachen was my favorite. To drink, I had a Bit Sun which is a light, refreshing beer.

In addition to currywurst, Pomm"Pös has many other choices on their menu. As the name suggests, the house specialty is the fries.

    Great place -- highly recommended!

This was the setting for our VT meeting evening meal. Food was of good quality and most seemed to enjoy it, despite the somewhat stressed out waitress who tried her best to cope with us!

For starters I had a watercress and shrimp soup - very delicious. Then I enjoyed the Aachen beef marinated in ginger and served with red cabbage and potato dumpling - I like to go for the traditional dishes where possible. To finish it was chocolate mousse with pears - cost of meal just under 20 euros.

For lunch on my second day in Aachen, I stopped at Leo Der Bäcker & Konditor which is a café/bakery chain in Aachen. I ordered a baguette with raw mettwurst and onions. While the minced pork in mettwurst is raw, it is preserved by curing and smoking. I have never had anything quite like it before, and it is quite tasty.

The bakery portion of Leo has many delicious bread, pastries, cakes, and other desserts. I didn't try any, but they looked delicious.

TinyTruck had arranged for the VT meeting to have the cake special here - two scummy pieces of cake plus the gingerbread and a coffee for 6 euros. There were several cosy rooms upstairs where we recharged our batteries after the guided city tour.

Besides the local speciality of chocolate gingerbread there were rice cakes - a bit on the heavy side but delicious - and apple fuitflans. Coffee was a bit on the cold side though.

This bakery called Oebel, also allowed you to sit down and have breakfast or lunch. You can order all kinds of sandwiches or pastry and a cup of coffee or tea to go with it. The prices are also very good here. This one was located in the heart of the center, near the cathedral.

Sultans of Kebap: Awesome Doner Kebaps (aka Kebabs)!

On the second night of my stay in Aachen, I ate dinner at the Sultans of Kebap located on Peterstrasse. It is a couple of blocks from the bushof (bus station) on the same side of the street.

Aachen has a fairly large Turkish population, so there are quite a few restaurants serving Turkish cuisine. In Turkey, some people use the term "kebap" instead of "kebab". The two terms basically mean the same thing. When I saw the big sign for Sultans of Kebap, I knew that this was the place that I would have the first doner kebap on my trip.

The Sultans of Kebap is a large, clean restaurant. After you order, they cut the kebap meat off of large skewers. They also stack your dish with salad, fries, and your choice of sauces. I like the fact that they slice the kebap meat thin. To drink, I had an Apollinaris mineral water.

This doner kebap was one of the best that I have ever had. I highly recommend the Sultans of Kebap if you are looking for good, inexpensive Turkish food in Aachen!
