I lived and worked in a small village called Epe, near Gronau on the dutch border of Enschede. It has grown into a highly modern shopping and commercial industry. Also easily accessed by the A30 and A1 Autobahn (motorway). Here lies a lot of farmland and woodland surrounding Ahaus with tiny villages dotted about. A great deal of the landscape, fauna and flora, is protected by law. The roads are well designed with the cyclist in mind giving them ample lanes to cycle on.

    Cycle Tours
There are many cycle routes you can use to explore the area which lead you to small villages where you may want to rest and refresh yourself with some coffee and cake.
Just cycling around the area you will find hidden smallholdings, breweries, craftshops, small quaint cafes, woodland picnic areas and many farms. Very picturesque and an ideal place if you are looking for a quiet place to stay.

    Hidden Tracks
There are also some interesting smuggler's routes that take you directly across the border to holland. The most notable landmark of Ahaus is the Barockwasserschloss (castle)with its huge parkland built around the 15th century. A visit to the old watermill in Alstaette wouldn't go amiss and the windmills in Wuellen are an interesting feature to go and explore.
