Once upon a time there was a very talented chef in a big and expensive restaurant. He had to prepare all those fancy dishes for his guests: caviar, lobster, steaks...But when he came home late at night he could not stop thinking of fries, sausages, cole slaw and homemade hamburgers.Something had to be done about that. He thought and calculated and...more
Nice ambience. You can choose between rustic beer pub and more modern restaurant. The dishes also are different depending on the place. In the pub you find more rustic regional, cheaper food, in the restaurant dishes with a modern touch, inspired from regional, asian and mediterranian kitchen. But at both places the food is good. You can also get...more
A nice evening meal here with very friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant has an outside patio area which is nice on a warmer evening.Food was good though took a while to arrive. Not badly priced with mains around 15 euro. Tapas dishes at around 4 to 5 euro. Not sure about Spanish 'authenticity' though. Appears to have a bowling alley in the...more
Ebm, Industrial, Gothic, Mittelater, Classics, Obscure specials, and eighties - a double floor cafe and dancefloor with room for concerts. I attended the 3-25-06 evening, with the EVP release party and CD Verlosung. DJ's Carsten and Kylon and Gawl. Very aesthetic, charming, and somber, its a good night of Gothic enjoyment with two dance floors to...more

For a so-called high-level, modernized country like Germany who proclaims to have everything the best, all modernized and up to standard, the "ticket controller" system on the rickety, antiquated subways bring tourists and visitors to a gasp! This low-level, grey-collar industrial mining area of Germany with their mean Hitler-looking men who walk...more

Ok, so Bochum may not be Germany's most beautiful, most interesting, most whatever city (although it really isn't ugly or boring either), but I simply like it there. I find it combines friendly, down-to-earth people with a huge cultural aspect. There are always interesting exhibitions, concerts, readings, plays, movies etc.I was surprised at the...more
I guess there is not much to see here, on a nice spring day I wanted to visit here, but they charge more then beer and the terrace was very tempting.
Unique Suggestions: I guess it will have to wait for a rainy day.
Fun Alternatives: Alternative? Sure, have another beer and enjoy it.

Serveral ancient trees in the castle park of House Weitmar are remained from the air attack in 1943. This physical monuments with weird tops of a tree and trunks invite to a contemplative walk in the park. From the old castle ruin your walk can be continued to a marked footpath. Above a country lane the way follows along an old coal road route to...more
Almost like anywhere in Germany, football is the sport and the Bochum club had just returned this year to the ‘Bundesliga’ so you can see good football there. The big advantage here is that this club is not the most successful, neither popular and you can get sometimes tickets on the day of the match, except of course when they play Bayern München,...more
I spent 6 weeks in Bochum altogether, three times 2 weeks. There is this institute in Bochum called the LSI, Landesspracheninstitut. There you can rent a room at the institute (very nice rooms) and take intensive language courses, in difficult languages only: Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean. The courses are really well worth it. The...more
