Beer Garden Alter Zoll: Where Your Roof Are The Trees Leaves

When I was rolling along the Rhinebank promenade I was always wondering what's the giggling up there up on and behind the wall -- now I found out! Bonn has quite a long riverside on both Rhine banks so there is a fair number of beer gardens catering for the thirsts of walkers, cyclists and rollerbladers. This one is a bit different as it is the closest one to the inner city and only a stone's throw from the university's main building. Not surprising it's a popular student summer hangout but I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't like to sit under such a great roof enjoying a mild summer's night. The Kölsch from the tap is very good and they also have reasonably priced pub grub including small pizzas for about EUR 5 each.

Dress Code: none.

in various districts: Student's nightlife in Bonn

Bonn features a large number of pubs. Generally Bonn nightlife is located outside city centre. In the center you find your daytime-pubs.

In the following, I will name just few for you to check out, for example, there is the Pendel (Vivatsgasse 2a, pedestrian precinct), the Cartoon (Kasernenstr. 16), as well as the Giacomo (opposite C&A).

Close to the old part of the town you will find the Jazzgalerie (Oxfordstr. 24), another dancing-night venue. The two pubs, Namenlos and Bla, located on the left-hand side of the Stadthaus (city hall) occasionally have live concerts.
Discoteque: Carpe Noctem at Hauptbahnhof, main station (Wesselstr. 5) and "tiefenrausch" (Bertha-von-Suttner Platz 25).

There are so many pubs in the old part of town, Altstadt, that I cannot list all of them. Try the Pawlow (Heerstr. 64), a pub with an open-air terrace, where you get the recordings of local bands, the Babel (Franzstr. 36) and the Duck (Heerstr. 132, reggae and African music).

In Poppelsdorf a large variety of pubs is to be found in one street - bars, taverns, restaurants, beginning with Buena Vida Havanna in Clemens-August-Straße 1 (near Schloss and botanical garden). My favourite restaurant and bar in this street: Fellini's, italian flair!

Various other pubs can be found in the Südstadt district, e.g. the Kratz (Lennéstr. 61), Lamme Goedzak (Bonner Talweg 177). Hungry? You like nice italian food? Authentic freshly made Italian favorites are served up in a small Südstadt-Bistro called Così (Prinz-Albert-Straße 42), antipasti selections, Pasta, ... and good wine.

In Bonn- Endenich (e.g. Odeon, Endenicher Str. 268; The Fiddlers, Frongasse 9; the Harmonie, Frongasse 30 (don’t miss the live concerts),
In summer time, you should also try one of the numerous beer gardens, e.g. Alter Zoll (Brassertufer) close to the University, or Rheinlust on the Bonn-Beuel riverside.

Buena Vida Havanna: Deserves A Full Blown VT-Boycot

This upscale and much too popular place has the most outstandingly worst service anywhere. When we wanted to sit down outside with our VT-group and asked where we could do so, we were told not to sit anywhere unless we wished to get no service at all. Consequently, we moved next door where at least we were served. An embarrassment to the trade and a total disgrace to the city and region. Do not support this place through your business -- if the staff behaves as though it wants to put the place out of business before too long, then why indeed shouldn't this actually happen?

Brauhaus Machold: Great Pub

Brauhaus Machold

This is a very popular and spacious pub built into the rooms of a former brewery protected under the cultural heritage code. Mixed clientele, very enjyoyable. Pub grub above standards, both in size and quality -- and, slightly, also in price. Upscale place for young and old and everyone inbetween :))

Going to the concert of the Battlefield Band was Win's idea. And I should admit it was an excellent one. The band was fantastic and created fabulous mood in the public. If you are inetersted have a look at the rest of the pictures, the are pretty interesting bunch of people and also very good mucisians. I was truely impressed by the variety if instruments they had used.

The concert was held in Brotfabrik. From what Win told me I understood that the building is an ex-factory used at present for a cultural center. It is known to be a good spot for concerts and watching European movies without translation. So, if you are a bit nostalgic about some English speech you might try your luck there.

I had put the link to their website here but it will not be very useful to you unless you know German.

Blow Up: Dirty old rock and soul

This place used to be a brothel called "Lady Hamilton's", though now it's probably dirtier =) The decor stays true to this history with old gilded mirrors and 60s nudie art on the walls, and a very "worn-in", "comfortable" (or just dirty) vibe.
Musically like nothing else in Bonn, it's 60s rock and soul, a very refreshing change from your standard house.
Crowd is a good mix (Thursday is big for students I believe), and thankfully devoid of snobby types.
Occasionally dancing but mainly sitting and talking, it's open very late so is a refuge for many at the end of their night.

Dress Code: Streetwear. In fact they'd probably turn you away if you dressed too well =)

Fiddler's Pub: A Piece of Ireland in the Rhineland

One of the Rhineland's best pubs -- the Fiddler's

Each village seems to have an Irish themed pub now, but this one is a really good one! The authenticity is greatly enhanced by Beamish from the tap and an excellent Irish flavoured cuisine.

If you must crash, do it here! Great place!

Bonnsch?

Every city in Germany has its local beer, and Bonn is no exception. That said, the local delicacy, called "Bonnsch" is pretty darn similar to Kolsch, the happy hoppy beer made in Cologne and sold throughout the world.

While we were in Bonn, we stopped by a local brewery and sampled their wares. And it was good. Can you beat a town with excellent beer and wurst? No. Bonn ist wunderbar!
