Personal Memories and Impressions, Cologne
You'll find Cologne to be very manageable. Everything is conveniently located in the shadows of the great Cathedral. Although, let's face it, the entire state of Nordrhein-Westfalen is in the shadows of the great Cathedral.
The beverage of choice in these parts is Kölsch, a light golden lager served in teeny little glasses. It's not bad, but not really my style. I'm more of a dark, malty beer kind of guy, but in the summertime, Kölsch does well in a pinch.
A must-see is the Koeln cathedral, built in the 1300's and heavily damaged in World War II. Renovation continues even today. This Gothic cathedral, with its ornate architecture and flying buttresses, is a feast for the eyes.
Fondest memory: The jovial atmosphere attained when congregating with friends at a beerhall near the town center, enjoying bratwurst, sauerkraut and beer brewed in-house.
take a sight seeing boat ride on the Rhine River. Get off the boat at one of the small villages and have lunch at a gast haus. The beer and food is something you will remember the rest of your life. I know because I did exactly that in 1958 and it is still a vivid memory. I served in the US Army in Germany 1958-1960. Went back 4 times since then.
Fondest memory: I remember the trains, mountains, flowers, lakes, beer, food, music, friendship, the cathedral in Cologne(climbed to the top)the gast hauses and the way the german people enjoy their liesure time. I also have fond memories of the chair lifts at Rudesheim, Assmanshausen and the car ferries at Koblenz, Bingen and Mainz. Germany is right up there at the top of my favorite countries to visit.
The biggest attraction is the beautiful cathedral. Also you must go to the chocolate museum!
Fondest memory: Drinking german beer and liking it! It tastes much better over there!
take a stroll by the Rhine and admire the city's skyline.
Fondest memory: The first time you see the Dom you can't help to keep your mouth opened.
the Dome incl. square, the main train station, the shopping roads, the museum(s) near the Dome, the 'Cinedom' cinema, the Cologne zoo
Fondest memory: hanging out at the old town beer shops and the old town meadows
