    Cinedom in Mediapark
    by diocletianvs
MediaPark is the recent urban development project in Cologne constructed in the 1990s on the 200,000 m2 area of the former area occupied by the railway freight depot. The complex consists of several centres for information, communication and media technology, a large park with a lake, and a large cinema (Cinedom).

Today roughly 5,000 people work here in some 250 companies that are located in the MediaPark. There are approximately 4.5 million visitors per year.

The urban development concept was designed by the German-Canadian architect E. Zeidler, and buildings were realised by renowned architects. The highest building of the complex, The Köln Turm skyscraper, was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

MediaPark was the last on my list of things I was showing to Sabsi - we were there on Saturday evening and the area was very alive thanks to numerous small restaurants and the giant multiplex cinema.

    Die Bastei
    by diocletianvs
The Bastei is small architectural masterpiece situated on the Rhine embankments north of the center. This former restaurant was built by architect Wilhelm Riphahn in 1924. It is a round building with a pointed, tented roof in the centre. In front of the main hall there is a terrace which goes around with a fan-shaped flat roof with a glass balustrade.

Once a restaurant with a rich tradition, Die Bastei is today operated by Cologne Fair and only occasionally there are some events organized in this architectural jewel situated directly above the Rhine. Even if you stand below it, the views of the Rhine, the bridge and the towers of Cologne churches are amazing.

I am known as the lover of the early high-rise buildings so Maybachstrasse 115 was a must address for me. The Hansahochhaus skyscraper was built in 1925, designed by Jakob Koerfer. At the time of construction, the 17-storey clinker building reaching 65 metres height was Cologne's first high-rise building, and simultaneously the highest skyscraper in Europe.

Today, it is a business and administration building. There is large Saturn CD shop occupying several lower levels of the building.

I was more attracted to see the building of the Museum for East Asian Art than the collection itself. The building was designed in by Kunio Maekawa (1905-1986) who was a pupil of Le Corbusier. Its pure lines, ingenious use of materials and overlapping of volumes draw sources both from old Japanese traditions and from modern architecture. The building is centred round a landscaped garden in the tradition of Japanese gardens of meditation created by the Japanese sculptor Masayuke Nagare (born 1923) and the whole complex is situated at the edge of the wide strip of parks and lakes.

The Museum itself houses Chinese, Korean and Japanese art. It was founded in 1913 and was the first museum of its kind in Germany. The core of the permanent collection is the Japanese collection of the founder of the museum Adolf Fischer (1857-1914) and his wife Frieda Bartdorff (1874-1945).

When Niksa visited Cologne this place was on his "list of architectural beauties in Cologne". We haven't been inside this museum for east asian art but had a look from the outside.

The museum is in a very nice building directly at Aachener Weiher, a nice lake at the outer ring around Cologne. Inside the building you will find art from Eastern Asia as well as a nice Asian garden and a very nice cafeteria.

Wilhelm Riphahn was the architect who built lots of buildings in Cologne. One of his most beautiful buildings is Alte Bastei, a panorama restaurant that looks a bit like a caroussel which was built in 1924.

Unfortunately nowadays the place is closed and a bit run down, it must have been beautiful to eat in a stylish place like this overlooking the Rhine. It's still a nice spot to get some great architecture shots.

The Bastei is located at the Rhine, where the northern part of the inner city ring meets the street along the Rhine.

    of St. Peter
    by Diana75
The Portal of St. Peter is the only portal of the Cathedral which was at least partially completed during the Middle Ages.
Members of the famous Parler Family, created the work around 1375.
On both sides of the portal stand large sculptures of apostles, out of which five are still original: Peter, Andrew, Jacob, Paul and John.

Back in 1999, my friend and I were on our way to Bonn for a day trip to view Beethoven's house and to try Bonch, Bonn's recently concocted version of Kölsch. That beer was quite unremarkable and served in a silly bent glass. On the way back, I noticed a beer sign on a small pub from the train window. I looked over at my friend and he knew immediately I wanted to hop off the train and try one. A good thing about German trains is if you buy a ticket between two cities you are allowed to get off and on as many times as you want as long as you continue in the same direction. So, we did. We found the Richmodis Kölsch quite tasty. One beer later we were back on the train platform and the whole thing took less than an hour. We saw a part of Germany we'd never have seen without this little stop and we talk about it sometimes and laugh at the impulsive move. I'm glad we did. It seems the Gaffel brewery has since taken over Richmodis. Who knows if the beer is the same now or if it will even exist in ten years.

    Window of the Nativity
    by Diana75
Another favourite window is the Window of the Nativity.
The central picture shows the Christ Child between Mary and Joseph.
In the left panel Moses stands before the burning bush.
All of the saints in the lower half of the window have a relationship to Cologne: Agrippa is the founder of the city and Marsilius is the legendary hero of ancient Cologne.
The larger figures above are the city patrons of Cologne: Saints George, Maurice, Gereon and Albinus.
The window was donated by the City Council in 1507.

    Kölner Dom - Window of
    the Three Holy Kings
    by Diana75
The windows of Kolner Dom are magnificent, each of them being full of signification.
The Window of the Three Holy Kings is one of my favourites.
In the lowest part of the window are two rows with 16 coats of arms.
The saints above are the patron saints of the archbishop and his house: Saint Peter, presenting the archbishop, Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia and Saint Christopher.
The central part presents the Adoration of the Magi.
On the left the visit of the Queen of Sheba.
The window was donated by the Cologne Archbishop Hermann von Hessen (1480-1508).
