The Cathedral in Koln is very beautiful, a huge gothic cathedral. All of the architecture points upward. When you look at it, your gaze naturally goes up, it is designed to point to the Heavens. The intention here is that we should always seek those precious things from above, and not concern ourselves too much with transient worldly matters. The cathedral is unfortunately blackened by car pollution. Some sections have been cleaned, the soot is removed to reveal its true color - pearl white! Che bella la chiesa! The Cathedral also contains the alleged relics of the 3 Wise Men who visited Jesus in Bethlehem. There is really no way to prove whether the relics are legitimate or fakes. The stained glass inside is pure eye-candy, and the cathedral has beautiful, giant pipe organs. I would love to hear one played! Leave a Comment Directions: If you are anywhere in Cologne, just follow the towers! You can see them from anywhere, the Cathedral is that big.

Gerhard Richter - window by MichaelFalk1969 Modern artist Gerhard Richter contributed a new stained glass - window to the Cologne Cathedral - a random collection of colourful geometrical figures. It is in the right central wing of the cathedral. The window was disputed though as some meant a church window with a purely geometrical motiv is not suitable for a place like a Cathedral. I will not add to this discussion but just say that it fits in rather well as a modern contribution.

Kölner Dom by MichaelFalk1969 The gothic Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is probably the most popular sight in Germany (and easily accessible, too, since it is only a few meters walk from the main railway station). Many superlatives are connected to the cathedral: The third-highest church in the world, the second-highest church in Germany, the third-largest gothic cathedral world-wide. It is one of the finest examples of medieval church architecture, and its silhouette is instantly associated with the city Cologne. The only thing you will have to get used to is that it is always crowded - due to hundreds of tourists roaming the cathedral grounds, it never feels quiet here. The tower viewing platform is also accessible after a strenuos climb, and the treasury of the Cathedral is surely worth a visit.

by MichaelFalk1969 The stained glass windows in the Cologne Cathedral are marvelous. For the most part depicting biblical stories, but also historical figures and coats of arms, and there is even one window made by a contemporary artist with a purely geometric image (Gerhard Richter-window).

the cathedral is rather large and quite grimy, at least the exterior was! I was less impressed by the size and history and grandeur of it all than that they could rebuild the damn thing after it had been blasted to bits during WW2. that's pretty amazing! and it's a nice place to run into when you're distressed and have a moment of silence--since you're probably not into christianity and all that--but it is no doubt a very peaceful place, and kneeling before candles and 500 year old altars with carvings of repressive political figures does help put your life into perspective (i'm the most UNchristian person I know, too). Leave a Comment Directions: you can't miss it! you can see it from literally any part of the city!

View from Cologne Cathedral by King_Golo Cologne's cathedral (Kölner Dom) is one of the most impressive and also biggest churches in Germany. It may even be the biggest one if consider its size and not its height, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, it was built in Gothic style but has basically been a construction site ever since. Even today, parts are refurbished or renewed or finished... The inside is great: a vast Gothic room with beautifully coloured windows through which the sun shines and leaves a strange light inside the church. More impressive even is the view from up the tower. To get on top you have to climb 509 steps (no lift available!), but the view over the Rhine with its many ships, the roofs of the city, the people looking tiny as ants in the surrounding pedestrian zone, or - as long as the air is clear - the nearby area is marvellous! This is a sight that you definitely shouldn't miss! Leave a Comment Address: DomplatteDirections: central Cologne - signs are found everywhere and you can hardly miss the city's highest building, can you?

Impressive... by garridogal How could you NOT go to the Dom? It's spires are visible from so many points in the city. In fact, I recommend staying in a hotel near to it so you can use those spires as a guide to get you home when you've had too much Kolsch and are alittle confused... But seriously, we walked by the Dom all the time while in Cologne and every time, I had to stare at it and naturally, take pictures. I put a travelogue together with those photos. Check it out - you know you want to... Leave a Comment Directions: You can't miss it...

Detail: Adoration of the Magi (Lochner, 1440) by hquittner, 4 more photos I only found 2 of the major objects inside the Dom. The altarpiece of Stefan Lochner (ca1440) is in a chapel at the beginning of the S. ambulatory showing the Adoration of the Magi. Almost nothing is known about Lochner, but his style shows grace and some early mastery of perspective at that period( more paintings by him are in the nearby Wallraf-Richartz Art museum).Do not miss it! Behind the altar stands the reliquary, the Dreikonigenschrein, a gold basilica shaped chest (12-13C). Finally there is the Cross of Gero at the axial chapel, but we did not find it, only another one. Along the pillars are fine statuary but it was too dark to see the restored medieval colors. The day was dark and I was unable to record the choir stalls or other things. Leave a Comment

by Rupanworld Inside the Cathedral there are so many things to see that one may easily get confused or even not know what thing is what. Its the best idea to purchase a leaflet called Domforum that one gets just after entering the Cathedral in different lanuages for just one euro. It describes everything inside the Dom worth seeing and provides a map to the same.
