The main building of Acedemy of Music is the former “Neuer Palais” (New Palace), and old building from 1718 that served as residence of the princely widows. Behind this building is a very nice garden, the “Palaisgarten”. It was constructed in a baroque style and later was extended and redesigned. You there find several nice fountains and small...more
The Princely Residence Castle (Fürstliches Residenzschloß) first was a moat castle and then got reconstructed in the 16th century into a castle of Weser Renaissance style. Its tower is the landmark of Detmold. There are guided tours through the castle every hour except at 13:00. They are in German, but you can get the text in English, French and...more
In Detmold you’ll find many nice half-timbered houses - not only in the open-air museum! If you walk through the streets near the market place (for example the street “Krumme Gasse”), you can find lots of them. Usually there are also interesting sayings on the houses. At the market place, you find the market church, which is the only medieval...more
The open-air museum in Detmold is really an impressive one, with many old houses that you can visit. In one building you even were allowed to touch everything and you could test how to lie in an old bed. The open-air museum is very large, the grounds are 90ha with over 100 buildings, so you should plan to spend quite some time there! I’m sure we’ve...more
A bit outside of Detmold on the Grotenburg hill you find this large monument of Hermann the Cheruscian, who is also called Arminius. He had lived 2000 years ago and defeated the Romans in the Varus battle (Varian disaster/ Battle of the Teutoburg Forest). He destroyed three Roman legions and in the years afterwards, the Romans stopped their...more
A nice museum right around the Detmold Palace at the banks of the Weser river. Now additional two half-timbered houses from the 18th century, accommodate the six departments of the national museum. The museum was again enlarged in January 1997. The battle in the Teutoburg Forest took place in 9 a.c. In 2009 Detmold celebrated the 2000th anniversary...more
It's a great walk around Detmold's palace and its palace garden even in winter, then when the days are typical German and grey. But what exactly is Weser Renaissance? Weser Renaissance is a term that can can be misleading as it might suggest a separate regional variant of the Renaissance style. Actually, the Renaissance buildings in the Weser...more

The princely residence castle is located in the center of the town park of Detmold. Originally this building was more of a fortress than the beautiful castle you can admire today. All through the Middle Ages the fortress was expanded but only as recently as in the 18th century the former fortress was renovated according to Baroque style and with...more
The Hermannsdenkmal (Hermann Monument) is 53,46m high and on top, you have a spectacular view of the area. The statue is situated in Teutoburg Forest. It can be seen from many different points of the county, looming above the land from its high point on the densely forested and 386m tall mountain Teutberg. The Hermannsdenkmal depicts Hermann...more
Externsteine is a distinctive rock formation located in Teutoburg Forest. It is a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is 37.5m high. They form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks. The geological formation consists of a hard, erosion-resistant sandstone,...more

We found Restaurant Schlosswache by coincidence after strolling around Detmold Palace and its beautiful palace garden. Ended up at the pedestrian zone, and entered this warm-welcoming-cosy-classy-perfectly-goose-cooking restaurant. That was a great break from the cold. Restaurant's food is fantastic, has also special kids' menu. We've had goose stuffed with apple and marzipan. Amazing mix, then red cabbage, brussels sprouts, and dumplings.
Also Wiener Schnitzel and fantastic crispy fries. Coffee, apple juice, soda, mineral water.
That was back in 2007. When we passed by there the other year, restaurant sort of looked empty yet, moved away?

In the mornings in Detmold the Market Traders set up their stalls. You can buy all kinds of meat, fish, fruit and veg, plants and lots more.
What to buy: The produce all looks good and fresh. I would not normally consider buying meat from a market where I live but it all looked good here. I bought some fruit and it was fresh and juicy.
What to pay: Much cheaper than UK.
The “Picker” is a traditional dish in Westfalia. It’s a kind of thick pancake made of potatoes and yeast, either fried or baked. I had one in the restaurant “Im Weißen Roß” in the open-air museum, and it was one large “Pickert” that was about 2 cm thick. It was served with sugar beat syrup, butter and leberwurst. The “Pickert” was with raisins, but...more
