Favorite thing: The strongest impression caught in my first visit to Dortmund was the black colour of many buildings. I know that coal was dominant in the old times, butt for someone used to the white dominance in our Mediterranean houses, it was almost a shock.
Interesting the contrast with the "always" white curtains in all windows.

Favorite thing: In 2008 the Love parade was celebrated in Dortmund. Originally the love parade is known from Berlin where it first drew hundreds of thousands techno music freaks. These days the love parade takes place in the Ruhrgebiet, each year in a different city.
There is a rhino left over from this event. You will find it when you come out of the main entrance/exit of the Dortmund railway station, cross the street und go up the stairs.

Favorite thing: These cute rhinos of the countries that played in the soccer world championship in Dortmund can be found near the Friedensplatz and the Adlerturm. Of course, I was very pleased to see the Swiss rhino there too.

Favorite thing: The Kreuzviertel is a city in the city. Appartments are difficult to get, because whoever lives here hardly moves to a different location. You are close to the centrum (by feet 10 minutes, by metro 5 minutes) and tons of bars around.
Check out the Kreuzviertel ! And see the best website of the Kreuzviertel: by

Favorite thing: Dortmund is not really a touristy place and you will have to look for things to do. It is a nice place to go shopping, though.
Fondest memory: Eating a huge bowl of ice cream and fruit in one of the ice cream shops. The Germans know how to do ice cream right!
