Hohensyburg doesn’t just stand for the castle ruins that you find on this hill above the Ruhr valley, but also for a vast recreation area with a casino, mini golf, a big park and walking paths. The castle is today only a ruin of a middle age stone castle which was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. Within the ruins you will also find war memorials to the first and second WW. Leave a Comment Directions: near Syburg outside Dortmund city center

The St. Petri church is protestant and originally built between 1319 and 1353. The construction of the tower started in 1396. Part of the church collapsed in 1752. After the bombing in WW2 on 23rd May 1943 the St. Petri church was rebuilt between 1958 and 1981. The total height of the tower is 105 meters. Inside the church is quite large. Make sure you go to the other end as you will find the famous Antwerp altar from 1521 behind a makeshift wall. It’s by master Gilles and is the biggest altar of Westfalia with 633 figures, it is also called the “golden wonder”. At certain times you can go on a tour behind the wall, if not then you can look through the windows like I did. You can see the closed wing altar in the week before Easter. The side with the paintings (see my photo) you can see from Whitsunday until the beginning of October and the golden wonder from the 1st Sunday in October until before Easter and again until Whitsunday. The altar was not destroyed in the war because it was taken to security during that time. Leave a Comment

Friedensplatz means peace square. Here on the peace square you will find the town hall, the city hall, the peace column. The square was redesigned in the late 80s and the Berswordt hall was added to the town hall in 2002. You can enter the Berswordt hall freely and there is a café inside too. Leave a Comment

The Propsteikirche is the main catholic church and is dedicated to St. Johann the Baptist. Dominican monks built this church from 1331 when the monastery was founded as well. It took centuries to finish constructing the church. In 1816 the monastery was closed and this church was the first post reformation catholic church. In 1859 it was elevated to Probsteikirche. In the Second World War it was almost entirely destroyed. Between 1953 and 1966 the church was rebuilt. Leave a Comment

This monument was constructed in 1902 in memory of the foundation of the German Reich. You can see this dominant monument from far away. Kaiser Wilhelm is sitting on his horse in front of a 34 meter tower. On either side of him there is a monument of Bismarck and Moltkes. The monument did change apperances over time. When first built there were many more additions like the two princes and the tower was different. It got its present shape during the Nazi time. Leave a Comment Directions: Hohensyburg

You can see the Florian tower from far away because it’s 212 meters high. In the height of 138 meters there is a restaurant that turns slowly around. To get to the tower you have to enter the Westfalenpark which housed the “Bundesgartenschau”, which is a nationwide garden show in 1959, 1969 and 1991. Leave a Comment

The old city hall was built in 1899 in the new renaissance style by Friedrich Kullrich. After the WW2 bombing it was rebuilt in a mix of new renaissance and Industriezeitalter. The Berswordt hall was added in 2002 to the side of the town hall and it's also for civil service and public use. Leave a Comment

The Reinoldi church was first built in the 10th century. From 1250-1270 an early gothic colomn basilica was built on the previous spot. The high choir is late gothic from the 15th century. In 1661 part of the church collapsed and had to be rebuilt. For a small fee you can climb the tower. I think it cost Euro 1.50 per person. Today the church is the city’s landmark. Leave a Comment

The Adler tower is a part of the reconstructed city wall which was built in 1990 after plans from 1610. Inside there is a museum about the reconstruction of the tower, the city’s history and middle age construction techniques. Leave a Comment
