The best you can do on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon in winter: head towards Brehmstraße ice hockey stadium and cheer for the DEG. Officially called DEG Metro Stars. But they'll always be our DEG.
It's a legendary team, with legendary supporters. With a legendary victory tonight. Beating the Frankfurt Lions 6:2. Frankfurt is No.1 in the German ice hockey league at this stage. They were German champions last year. You wouldn't believe it after tonight's match.
The icehockey stadium on Brehmstraße is cult, and it's just around the corner from where I live. I can here the fans singing and cheering after every single match. But still they are going to build a new ice hockey stadium, and I doubt it's going to be the same. It's on Brehmstraße where the DEG fights for victory and not in a new place somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
Our DEG has the best supporters in the world, and it's just a tiny little bit of songs against the Cologne sharks. Just one little song tonight ;-)
Equipment: - red/ yellow jersey or scarf or at least a cap
- wunderkerzen
- papierschnipsel
- glöckchen
- money for beer

Go and watch match of 1st league Ice hockey at the Brehmstrasse. THe team is called the Düsseldorfer Eislauf Gemeinschaft (short DEG) Metro Stars (as the main sponsor is the Metro Group). The DEG has been german Champion 8 times: 1967, 1972, 1975, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996
They play in an old rather dodgy arena, but true fans love it, unfortunately the atmosphere nowadays is just a shadow of what once was. They used to be sold out (11.333 people) every match, roughly 9000 people in the stands, the atmosphere was great. Now it depends very much against whom they play, matches against Cologne are sold out and the atmosphere is like in former days. Anyhow, now there is planes to build a new arena, which they really need.
Equipment: The only equipment you will need to watch a hockey match, is a couple of beers and a sausage.

The DEG is one of the big icehockey teams in Germany and the stadium at the Brehmstrasse is famous for some icehockey history as Düsseldorf often won the German mastership a lot of times. The most exciting match every year is the game against the Kölner Haie (Cologne Sharks), and Sabsi got me two tickets for this match in 2004!!! As you might know both cities don't like each other very much!!! So the fans don't like each other very much as well.... but it's still icehockey and so everyone is nice to each other.....well after the game :)
The DEG lost 2:5 when I have been there, but the huge crowd in that stadium made a fantastic athmosphere. There are over 10 thousand people going in the stadium.
Equipment: Icehockey Jersey, Fans Scarf and sparklers!!!

The stadium of one of the most popular icehockey clubs of Germany, the DEG Metro Stars, is just around the corner from where I live. I will definitely go there soon to see a match - preferable when they play their big enemies - the sharks of Cologne - Kölner Haie!
