I wasn't able to take a good photograph of the Stadttor due to the bright sunlight when I was there, but it is a fantastic structure. You can see the top half of it here, framed between two of the twisted Gehry office buildings. It is easily one of the most impressive buildings in the city and looks even better lit up at night than it does during the day. It reminded me a little of La Defence in Paris, only a little smaller and not quite as imposing. It is also made constructed from two glass towers, with a connecting glass attic. It was built in 1997 by architects Petzinka Pink and Partner, and in 1998 it won the object of the year award in the architecture "oscars" in Cannes.
The 80 metres high Stadttor is quite a recent addition to the skyline of Düsseldorf. More than a thousand people work here everyday. The Tor is in the centre of commercial Düsseldorf. Apart from all of this I think the building just looks fascinating.
This amazing glass constructed building - the "City Gate" built in 1998 - typifies the new designer Dusseldorf reclaimed from the wasted dockland area. Its even more amazing to drive through it - it was built over the road tunnel! It houses numerous offices, media centres and lawyers' practices. The huge, round steel columns have been intentionally left visible, and the design has won several awards.
Hold on though even more crazier buildings are around the corner.....
The new Düsseldorf City Gate was built on the southern end of the Rhine tunnel. This modern office building was built in 1998 out of galss and steel and houses some governmental offices. It received an Oscar for its architecture as the best office building!
Another piece of great architecture, for me this is one of the nicest office buildings I know. When driving towards the Rheinufer Tunnel from the south you will get a great "Big City View" when driving into the tunnel because the Stadttor was built on top of the tunnel entrance! One of my favourite routes in Düsseldorf!
The City Gate is the seat of the regional government (Staatskanzlei) and claims to have the largest hall in the world.
