Düsseldorf Things to Do

  • Old Town - Altstadt

    4.5 out of 5 stars

A work of architectural art in itself, the K20 Kunstsammlung NRW also contains a large collection of artwork of its own. Starting in 1960 the state government bought a collection by the painter Paul Klee, and added to that a great number of post-war works, including examples from Abstract Expressionism and Cubism. There are also plenty of other...

  • Rheinturm

Düsseldorf's slightly surreal municipal Rheinturm, towers above the city like an electric blue funnel standing on a stretched stem in a similar mould to Berlin's Fernsehturm. The tower was completed in 1982 and is located away from the old town, near the state parliament and casting an inescapable shadow over the Media Harbour. The views from the...

  • Königsallee

The Kö, or Konigsallee, is a prime piece of retailing real estate stretching from Karl-Theodor-Str. to the Landskrone. On both sides of the waterway there are many exclusive and expensive shops, as well as huge department stores and shopping complexes, like the Galeria Kaufhof and Seven. The kinds of shopping on offer include much in the way of...

Düsseldorf Restaurants

  • Uerige

    4.5 out of 5 stars

After a walk across the Altstadt to have some "Uerige Alt" beers (the second and next tastes better) with "Blutwurst mit Zwiebeln und Röggelchen" (black pudding with onions and a roll), Mainz cheese with bread and butter or ground meat with onions on a half roll. You will find allways all kind of people and to make contact to them is easy. They...

  • Zum Schlüssel

    5 out of 5 stars

Zum Schlussel is yet another Dusseldorf institution on the busy Bolkerstrasse. Though a bit more upscale than the city’s other brewpubs it is nonetheless a traditional and noisy affair. Oddly enough the servers are women, quite unusual and different from the other brewpubs in town. It serves perhaps my least favorite alt beer in town among the four...

  • Füchschen

    4 out of 5 stars

Im Füchschen (Little Fox) has become a bit of a meeting point for me. On my second visit to the hallowed beer town it was the first port of call with an old VT friend Kai. On subsequent visits it has been a first port of call of sorts too as I’ve met more VTers there for breakfast. This is another atmospheric dark wooden affair that is always...

Düsseldorf Nightlife

  • Old Town

Bar Engel is one of those dark bars with the nice rock music and there are so many of them in Altsadt. You can sit outisde and have a beer or some cocktail while listening rock music and watching a football game on the TV! So so unpretentious.

  • Nightclubs

Great service with friendly waiters. untill 22:00 it is very very cheap. A kind of advertising... After 22:00 prices are normal. Everynight in a week there is a different theme. Including karaoke, coctail hours etc. Also it is in the city center, and walking to hotel back is easy, if you are drunk. :-)

  • Irish Pubs

The oldest Irish Pub in NRW, 3rd in Germany! Cool people, good beer (said to have the "best Guinness" south of Dublin"...), sports on TV, the biggest (??) sports scarf collection. Perhaps the friendliest, certainly the cutest waitresses in town!!!!

Düsseldorf Transportation

  • Public Transport

Düsseldorf's transport system is a vast and somewhat confusing system of trams, busses and underground trains (more like trams that spend some time underground). There is also a similarly bewildering array of tickets to choose from, from simple single tickets at €1.10 to monthly tickets to the "Ticket 2000 9.00 am by subscription" (whatever that...

  • Airport

The new airport at Weeze is advertised as 'Dusseldorf' by Ryanair, the main user of the airport. Does Ryanair know where Dusseldorf actually is. You could argue that the airline doesn't know it's arse from it's elbow, and therefore has trouble locating places - but it does seem to be working. There are now about 50 destinations from the tiny...

  • Old Town

Since Uerige is a tourist stop of the highest order they also sell souvenirs. There is a glass case from which you choose from amongst the beery goodies. Alt bier glasses and beer mats are probably easiest to transport but there are lots of things to buy including swing top bottles of the world renowned beer.

  • Beer

The people of Düsseldorf, like most places in Germany, are very proud of their beers, and pour scorn on the local brews from nearby Cologne. The local brew is also very distinctive, and quite different from the more pils and lager style beers found in most of the rest of the country. The Düsseldorf Alt beer (old beer) is dark, flat, and with a...

Düsseldorf Local Customs

  • Food and Drink

If you go to Düsseldorf you have to know that the city is the "Altbier"-area. Altbier is considered Germany's oldest beer style. It's a dark beer especially brewed in the area around Düsseldorf. Never ever order a Kölsch (from Cologne) in Düsseldorf - the waitress may beat you up ;-) - that could also happen if you order an Altbier in...

This is actually a local custom for Hannover but since I’ve never been there and was introduced to it by Hanover transplant Sabsi who now resides in Düsseldorf I’ll put it here. There will be music you don't hear every day and the whole town...

  • 40 Euros Fine on the U-bahn!!

Visitors to Dusseldorf using the U-bahn must be very careful to have their tickets stamped in a specific way, using the red ticket machines. These ticket machines are located at the entry to platforms and on the trains themselves - but there is nothing to say how this system works.I found this out to my cost after having to pay a 40 euros fine for...

Düsseldorf Tourist Traps

  • beer for the train?

Yes, on my first trip I bought some of these 'swing top' bottles of Uerige Alt for the train ride back to our hotel in Cologne. Like I needed more beer after this outing with Kai.On subsequent trips I've brought the world class alt bier back to the...

I don't think that many tourists go to this museum - I've never met anyone who did, and I'll never recommend such a visit. It's pure boredom! It talks about the history of theater in Germany and Düsseldorf in particular, which...

This old stretcher is quite different to those we know by watching 'Emergency Room' on TV. It was used in 1850 in Diakonissenanstalt Kaiserswerth on the Rhine. I wonder about the cover on top. Mettmann is a small town in the "Bergisches Land". It's the town I work in and I normally just see the same spots here ("our" villa and the local supermarket) but there's also a lovely Market Square with a big church surrounded by cute slate buildings here. The name Mettmann is a bit funny actually as the translation would be "Mince Meat Man"....
