Yes, soccer that is to Americans. MSV Duisburg plays in the Bundesliga as I am typing this, and they are called the Zebras so if you see zebra stuff in newspapers or on clothes all over town, that's it.
Outside the City Hall there is a German Football Route sign where you can read up on the team (yes, in English too).

Climbing is big business in Duisburg now that they have the Landschaftspark Nord to practice in. Still, it looks a bit fun to see the Deutscher Alpen Verein, i.e. Alpine Association, represented on the site when we're talking the river plains of the Ruhr and Rhine rather than anything vaguely Alpine :))) But here they are and they are so big that they have a club house for parties and meetings and where you can even stay the night as a climber. Safety is of importance though and there are signs everywhere that you should bear in mind that the park is an old industrial site left on its own, which means that the structures are exposed to weather and other effects and perhaps not the same from one month to another. You are also never allowed to climb without proper safety lines and clips.

This is where a lot of world rowing championships were held. This is a very green area in the outskirts of down, next to all kinds of other sporting facilites (football stadium, ice skating ring). It is also a favourite place for joggers and walkers.

An old gasworks on the grounds of the former iron works which now build the "Landschaftspark Nord" was turned into a paradise for scuba divers. You can dive in the gasworks and I read they even put a shipwreck inside. For me it was a funny sight to see all the divers in their wetsuits running around an old factory!
Equipment: Dunno about it but I guess you can rent eqipment there. Check their website for more details!

Inside the "Landschaftpark Nord" there is a "Klettergarten" - an area for freeclimbers. They turned old factory walls and columns into climbing routes. I loved watching them climb and I loved reading through the names of the routes which were really funny! There is a huge chimney on the grounds of the park as well that can be climbed! It looked extremely scary to me!
Equipment: You are only allowed to climb if you registered first at the office of the "Alpenverein" on the grounds of the Landschaftspark. I don't know about it but I guess you have to bring your own climbing gear.
