The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is a massive former industrial site that has been turned into a park. The park was designed in 1991 by Peter Latz with the intention that German society understand and appreciate its industrial past, rather than reject it. Admission to the park is free to the public. Or, if preferred, tourists can take one of the guided tours offered by the park for a fee. The basis of the park is a a coal and steel production plant that was abandoned in 1985, leaving the area significantly polluted. In designing the park, Peter Latz attempted to preserve as much of the existing site as possible. The concept of memory was central to his design. The site was designed with the idea that a grandfather, who might have worked at the plant, could walk with his grandchildren, explaining what he used to do and for what the machinery had been used.

sloth by belgianchocolate In the ape-building they made a construction with ropes so the sloths can move arround freely over the heads of the visitors. Sloths are slow-moving native to south and middle america mammals. When you want to see them move arround I would sujest that you proove your luck early in the morning. They also have an enclosure in the middle , sort of a save haven for them. Other rare inhabitant : go and see the fossas. They got new enclosures as well. They are the largest felines - predators who live on madagascar. Everything that lives on madagascar (except humans) are extremely endagered I'm affraid. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate In the sixties the zoo started to collect dolphins and whales. In a very small basin the two last survivors live and still give shows. The smallest one is even the oldest jacobita dolphin in captivity in the world and the other one is a white wale - a Beluga. They are really impressive too see , but also a bit sad if you know that they spend there whole live in this little tub. Another specimen - very very rare in zoos- are a couple of freshwater dolphins. Orinoco dolphins. (toninas)And there bath is even more sad then the other one. But it is probably the only chance you ever lay your eyes on this animals. (sad isn't it) Because they became extremely rare. And no these Days it is impossible what zoos have done in the past. Such creatures don't belong in zoos. Leave a Comment

male gorilla by belgianchocolate One of the things that this zoo has put great effort in was its apes exhibit...In the sixties the zoo had the largest and most modern apes-house at the time. More then thirty years later it was a sad thing to see. Now the gorillas can enjoy a large outside island , and in a cave after a glass it is possible to watch them very close in the eyes. Like most zoos in the world they have western lowland gorillas. Other habitans of the building are orangs (chimps have moved) some smaller monkeys and sloth (see the other tips) Leave a Comment

vultures by belgianchocolate These birds live together in a nice open green area. Ideal to make good pictures on a sunny day. Do you know why most vultures neck is bold? Well nature made them that way because they could get easely in the veins of dead zebras (for example). Eurasion griffon vultures live in cold areas..So. Leave a Comment

by belgianchocolate What makes this zoo different then others? Well for a start there runs a highway right in the middle of it. (no joke). But they covered that well with a large bridge planted with lost of green. They have a few remarcable inhabitants and shows. All not so 21' century , but an inheritance from the past. At the same time the zoo is updating his enclosures. Leave a Comment Address: Mülheimer Str. 273Directions: please look at the website..verry easy by carWebsite: www.zoo-duisburg.de

An orange wall by Bigs On a sunny weather I can recommend a cruise through the biggest inland port of the world. The ships are starting at the Schwanentor and a round trip lasts about two hours....teh tour follows some canals throught the port and you also cruise on the Rhine for a while. You can also take a one way trip and come back with a tram.... The signs at the port aren´t clear really, but don´t worry about it. The roundtrip costs 8 €uros. This orange wall is a monument for all the industrial work that this area is well known for. It shows a glowing iron piece.......a so called "Bemme". Leave a Comment Address: Calais Platz

View over the Inner Harbour by Bigs One part of the port has been rebuild in the past years to a cultural area. You can find many restaurants here, two museums and a lot of the old architecture, but in a modernized way. Famous architect Norman Foster rebuild the "Hafenforum" there for example I think it´s really interesting to wander around, but Sabs and I didn´t had enough time..... we have to go back someday.... by Bigs This huge area full of rusty buidlings is a paradise for photographers that love insdustrial pics... I spent some hours here wandering around teh 2 squaare kilometer big areal.... On weekends and on holidays its illuminated in the evenings. Must be great, ask Sabs. When I have been there I had some parts for myself, which was kind of frightning a bit...but on the other side this was what made it so special.... Antique Rhine Sailing Ship by Weissdorn I had to laugh when I found out what the building used to be used for before it was a museum. It used to be a indoor swimming pool for one of those old "bath" houses from the 19th century. Now you can see this large old Rhine river sailing ship right in the middle of where the pool once was. You can even go under the ship, where you can see some of the stuff that lies around under the surface of the Rhine. The museum has a course from the beginning of travel on the Rhine in Europe up to the dwindling plight of the modern-day economic depression the plagues today's Rhine shippers. Particularily interesting is how welding revolutionized ship production over riviting and how this caused an economic boom in Duisburg. What's also nice to see is that sometimes you can find retired shippers sitting around telling stories about their experiences. If you can manage to share a table and the museum cafe, you they might share their stories with you. Open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3 - 6 p.m., and by appointment.
