grand hall by sandysmith Unfortunately (well not really we had seen a lot of other things during the day) we arrived just as the house was closing. Still we made the excuse of needing the toilets and had a quick sneaky look at some of the rooms on the way! Pretty impressivre staircase and ground floor with cosy library on the back. Definitely a place worth seeing more of another time.

Villa Huegel by sandysmith The Villa Huegel is a late 19th century house built for the steel tycoon Mr. Krupp of the famed Krupp steel factories. The house is huge - a grand setting for many exhibitions. The gardens around are vey extensive and pleasant too - a perfect for an evening stroll. Gardens and house are just 1 euro to enter, a real bargain!

Korn's Hotel That's a hotel, but also a great Restaurant. I was there last year in the Christmastime, cause my boss invite me to the Christmas dinner with the whole staff. The dinner was great, cause the atmosphere is very mediterranean and the food was very good, very delicios. Here is the address: Hoffnungstr.19, 451127 Essen, tel: 0201 221414. It's very hidden in the city. It's in a backyard. Leave a Comment

There is a auctioneers in Frohnhausen who sell a lot of junk. It's more a junkshop cause you can buy so many old things there. If you need glasses and don't want to pay too much for them, than you find there any kind of glasses,e.g. for wine, brandy or you also can buy glassbowls and cans. But all stuff is old cause they get all the things from households where the person died before and the relatives don't want these things. You can find some little treasures there. Books, old records, clothes, cupboards, wadrobes, TV's, and so many other things. It's pure fun to rummage around in this store. You can find it under this address: Auktionshaus Göhlmann, Berlinerstr.14, 45145 Essen, Opentimes:Mo-Fr 9.00 - 18.00 Leave a Comment

by evilboomer Africa Bazar This is a small shop which sells african fashion, instruments, jewelry and many more. This is a very nice shop and the owner is soo kind. It's a bit hidden in Essen. It's not directly in the city, you have to take the tram 109 or 103 to Steele and get out at the station 'Parkfriedhof'. From the station it's not far away to the Knaudtstr. The address is: Miriam Yeboah, Knaudtstr. 3 45138 Essen, Opentimes: Mo/Tue/Thu/Fri 10oo - 1800h and Wed/Sat 1000 - 1300h Leave a Comment

village scene by sandysmith The retired Krupp workers had this lovely green area of Essen to live in built for them - in much the same way that Lord Leverhulme built Port Sunlight on the Wirral for his workers. its a beautiful area to live in, very green and picturesque. The houses are very stylish, you will find a market square with a grand hotel and a fancy art deco supermarket facade as well as cute street names and a very quiet atmosphere.

Margarethenhoehe scene by sandysmith Margarethe Krupp, the widow of Friedrich Alfred Krupp, was the benefactor of Margarethenhoehe (hence its name). She announced the installation of a "foundation for housing services for the inferior classes" at the wedding of her daughter Bertha to Gustav von Bohlen und Halbach in the year of 1906. The principle of unity of work place and living quarters was broken here, and the idea of a class- and status-embracing community was born. The planning and land development of the garden city was assigned to the architect Georg Metzendorf - he came from souhern germany and may notice the influence of that region in his designs here.

Funny Ostriches by sabsi We found this ostrich farm by accident coming from the Autobahn at Essen-Kettwig. After a short while you will see a sign saying "Straußenfarm". I couldn't resist to have a look. On the farm which is in the middle of nowhere basically you can buy ostrich meat and eggs. However, we only had a look at the funny ostriches. And they were very funny and curious :-) Leave a Comment

Margarethenhöhe by sandysmith Alongside the main market square in Margarethenhöhe is the Kleiner Markt - here in the pic you can see an example ogf the pergola houses. Most have greenery clinging oto the thier walls adding to the charm of this place. Its no surprise that this housing development is considered a prime example of a German garden suburb and has been under monument protection since 1987.
