The Henrichshütte iron and steel works museum

    by Gili_S Updated Jun 19, 2005

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This region is known for coal and steel and Hattingen was living from this for 150 years. However, with the globalisation and competition this factory was not enough profitable and was shut down over 15 years ago. Today it is interesting museum that tell the story of the old industry and life in a steel town.

    The white house

This is probably the most famous building here in Hattingen. At any time during the daylight when you will pass here you will see someone taken picture of this house. It is located just there in the shopping area of the old city.

    Aldstadt

Just walking around the old town, the alstadt, you realise that many of the buildings have peculiar leans to them!

It was quite a contrast from our Wuppertal visit but again a place I would enjoy returning too.

    Living Museum

Walking around Hattingen is a pleasure as its pedestrianised. The whole town is like a museum - look out for the information boards on the buildings as you pass by. Only in german I'm afraid, but its handy if you have a translator with you ;-)

What a surprise find Hattingen was - isn't it great when you visit somewhere on the spur of the moment and it turns into a real gem of a place, so unexpectedly. So unresearched so no pre-conceived ideas of what to be looking at. The area of the "Malerwinkel" with its picturesque houses and the inclined St. George's Church tower is one of the most scenic spots in Hattingen. I just love the way those leaning roofs almost touch each other!

    Flat Iron House

This amazingly shaped house was built in 1611. You can see why it is named The "Bügeleisenhaus" (flat-iron house)!
Inside it holds the museum of the "Heimatverein - local traditions as a cloth maker lived and worked in this house between 1771 and 1856.

The old city is the main interest here. Few churches, old jail, nice old buildings and even some old wall that used to surround the old city.

Just behind the strange sculpture (see previous tip) these walls and tower were evident - presumably part of the city's old fortifications.
