Hattingen Things to Do

  • Church

While walking around on a beautiful sunny day I saw this church located a bit outside the walls of the old city.

    more
  • The Henrichshütte iron and steel works...

This region is known for coal and steel and Hattingen was living from this for 150 years. However, with the globalisation and competition this factory was not enough profitable and was shut down over 15 years ago. Today it is interesting museum that tell the story of the old industry and life in a steel town.

  • And a modern type white house

And this one was just next to the previous house, look modern to me but still fits very well with the feelings of this place.

    more
  • Another white house

While strolling around you can see many nice houses, some are old and some are new or renovated. This is another very nice white house I saw in the old city.

  • The white house

This is probably the most famous building here in Hattingen. At any time during the daylight when you will pass here you will see someone taken picture of this house. It is located just there in the shopping area of the old city.

  • The old city

The old city is the main interest here. Few churches, old jail, nice old buildings and even some old wall that used to surround the old city.

    more
  • City gate

This is the gate to the old city. It is modern made of stone and metal symbolize the old city and the memory of what used to be an industrial steel town that has been shut down few decades ago.

    more
  • House decorations

Apart from the black and white timbered houses another feature I noticed was some unusual house decorations - just like this colourful one.

    more
  • City Walls

Just behind the strange sculpture (see previous tip) these walls and tower were evident - presumably part of the city's old fortifications.

    more
  • Strange Sculpture

As we were leaving Hattingen I noticed this strange looking modern art sculpture of 3 figures. Very strange men indeed!

    more
  • Aldstadt

Just walking around the old town, the alstadt, you realise that many of the buildings have peculiar leans to them! It was quite a contrast from our Wuppertal visit but again a place I would enjoy returning too.

    more
  • Living Museum

Walking around Hattingen is a pleasure as its pedestrianised. The whole town is like a museum - look out for the information boards on the buildings as you pass by. Only in german I'm afraid, but its handy if you have a translator with you ;-)

  • Vollmond

Maybe this tip can also be at the nightlife tip, but as I always visited this place during a sunny day and I was sitting at the terrace I can only say that it is a nice place to have your beer outside in the old city and relax.

    more
  • Pizza

More then a tip this is a self reminder to check this peace in the future as it was recommended to me to try the large pizza they serve in this place

    more
  • Zur Börse

This is a nice Greek restaurant in the old city. Served by the owner and its family you really get personal service here. Food was excellent, the Ouzo was on the house and there is no way you will get hungry out of this place.

    more
  • Streets coffee shops

Beside the excellent bars and pubs around, there are few excellent coffee shops with the good standard German tradition. Unfortunately for me, so far I always preferred the cold beer, but maybe if I will visit here in the winter I will look for something else.

There is a railway station in Hattingen, which is connected to Essen and Oberhousen by local trains. Alternative there is also a tram that can take you to Bochum. I assume that there are bus services as well, but I did not check those.

Like in many German cities the pedestrian streets are the best areas for shopping, In Hattingen it is even combined with the old city, which make it nice if you intend for window shopping only.
