There is a railway station in Hattingen, which is connected to Essen and Oberhousen by local trains. Alternative there is also a tram that can take you to Bochum. I assume that there are bus services as well, but I did not check those.

Like in many German cities the pedestrian streets are the best areas for shopping, In Hattingen it is even combined with the old city, which make it nice if you intend for window shopping only.

The local Schnitzel, it came up with tomatoes and Camembert cheese, was delicious.
