Cross country skiing and downhill skiing
Around Herscheid in the hills it is perfect to crosscountry ski in winter. In certain places there are prepared tracks. One can only hope for a winter with lots of snow!
For crosscountry skiing you need to go up to "Nordhelle" where they spur a single track provided there is enough snow. The whole tour is about 8 km (I think) but you can do a shorter tour. On the link below you can check whether there is enough snow (in German only) and there you will also find a map (click on "Karte").
If you are hungry or thirsty then you can visit the café in the Robert Kolb tower where you can eat a hearty soup or something else.
These days there is no more downhill skiing. I can't remember when I've last seen the lifts running. That is you can ski down some slopes but you'll have to walk up ;-)

Swimming and 24 hours swim event
Herscheid has an outdoor swimming pool which is open in the warm season. The water is heated. There is a big pool for swimming and a jumping tower. Then there is a smaller pool for children and the baby pool.
There are changing rooms with showers and a kiosk with drinks and snacks. You may also attend swimming lessons.
Single entry is Euro 2.50 for adults, Euro 1.50 for children. Tickets for 10 entrances or season cards are also available.
Every 2 years the event "24 hour swim" is held. Swimmers of all ages go several times over a 24 hour period to swim as many kilometers as possible. Coffee, cake, bratwurst etc are sold by volunteers. Entry fee for spectators. All the proceeds from the sponsor (usually 1 Euro per kilometre) are donated to a social institution.
On the parking area outside the swimming pool there are a few places for mobile homes which you can rent for an overnight stay with electricity and shower in the swimming pool for a small fee.
On the hill above Herscheid called Linde you find an area where you may toboggan provided there is enough snow. The place called Linde is between Herscheid and a place called Berghagen.
Mind you the slope is quite steep, so watch you kids as you do it at your own risk!
Parking is available nearby.
While walking around we met this lovely girl Katrin and her horse “Lets joy”.... I wanted to take a ride as well, but....
Equipment: Katrin and the horse:)
