Easter Fire

At nightfall on Easter Saturday an Easter fire will be lit on a hill overlooking the village. The local clubs and associations stack up a high pile of wood and watch it overnight because you never know if some jester from a neighbouring village might take a fancy to lighting it a day early.

Das Kuckuckslied

Hesborn has its own "national anthem" which tells the story of when the Schuetzenfest-Bird described in the other local custom tip got stolen the day before the event, and the hot suspects for this practical joke are the neighbouring villages of Liesen and Medelon. Unfortunately I have not figured out yet how to format text with VTLM, so you have to make do with this:

Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck Kuckuck vallera ha ha
Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck Kuckuck vallera ha ha
Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck Kuckuck vallera ha ha

Drum Schuetzen Hesborns gebet acht,
wenn Ihr ein Fest begeht,
was Euer Schuetzenkuckuck macht,
ob er auch sicher steht.
Fliegt er davon, Ihr wisst es schon,
ruft Liesen gleich und Medelon.
Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck vallera, Kuckuck Kuckuck vallera ha ha

In summer the traditional 'Schützenfest' takes place in every village in Sauerland at different weekends (first weekend of July in Hesborn), and is usually the most important local event of the year. It goes on for 3 days and culminates in a shooting competition with a wooden bird as a target. Whoever brings the bird down is crowned King, chooses a Queen and his lords and ladies, and there will be a big parade in the afternoon. It is also a good excuse for going on a three-day drinking binge.
