Kleve Things to Do

  • Reichswald Forest CWGC Cemetery

Reichswald Forest War Cemetery was created after the Second World War when burials were brought in from all over western Germany and is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the country. Some of those members of the land forces buried there died in the advance through Reichswald Forest in February 1945. Others died crossing the Rhine, among them...

  • The castle and the church

From my research (which I did AFTER I visited Kleve...sigh!), there is a Schwanenburg, or Swans' Castle in the center of the city, said to have been founded by Gaius Julius Caesar. Then there is also the 14th-century Gothic church. So if you are into ancient architectures, then keep a look out for these two sites (which obviously I've missed), when...

Kleve Transportation

  • Train

The reason I stopped in this place was because they have a train connection to Weeze which is near the Niederrhein airport and from here it is easy and cheap to get to the Netherlands across the border by bus.

  • Bus

The German bus no. 58 will take across the border to Nijmegen central station. The cost is only 3.40 euro and the ride was about 40 minutes. No need to prepare your passport, there is no border check.

  • Train and car, bring you there, but also...

For us the car is the best way to reach Kleve, that is situated on the Western banks of the river Rhine. By train there are entrances from either German side (Duisburg / Düsseldorf) or The Netherlands (Arnhem).Special mentioning needs to be added by the shippingline that offers wonderful daycruises from either Nijmegen or Arnhem to Kleve. First...

Scemes of the main shoppingstreet in Kleve

Sometimes we go here to buy some stuff that in The netherlands only can be bought "out West in the Randstad". The shop has funny things and strange enough most products are actually "made in Germany". As Kleve has a substantial amount of Russian descendant, this shop isn't that awkward. Anyway, Irina is happy to sometimes get here some "smetana", "pilmini" and "vareniki", things she loves so much.

What to buy: As said ... Russian groceries and articles.

When in the hills of kleve mineral springs were discovered, the town got a name as "Kurort". A great Kur-hotel was built and later counts added wonderful gardens and parks around the places where one could take the curing water or the healthy dip into a bath filled with it. The gardens are still there in spectacular beauty, but the Bad kleve has not that famous name anymore as Kurort.

Culturally the town has known a time that Dutch painter "Koekkoek" lived and worked here. He founded an artist school and has now it's own museum here, the Koekkoek-house.

  • Kleve, where Dutch meet Germans

Walking around in Kleve, you will hear almost as much Dutch as german language. Many people from The Netherlands borderlands go to kleve (and other "cross-border-towns") as they still have the idea that in Germany groceries are cheaper. Some specific articles are, but when you buy overall the bill will end up the same highth as on our side of the...
